DEVCOM CBC engineers and scientists are working on an innovative device to allow respirators to identify and detect airborne chemical and biological threats. The ‘PHANTOM’ sampler attaches to the M50 respirator, allowing for better insight to dangers in the field and enhanced warfighter protection.

Read more about how the Center’s experts are partnering with academia to develop and refine the PHANTOM sampler capability for Soldiers and first responders.

💡A new technology developed at the Center—the Residual Life Indicator (RLI)—is revolutionizing how the Army ensures collective protection systems’ operational readiness. 💡

The RLI allows for accurate, on-site assessment of a filter’s remaining life without its removal from service, enabling continuous and uninterrupted protection for the warfighter. ⏳

The Center has acquired a melt spinner, the result of a collaboration with DTRA-JSTO and the North Carolina State University Nonwovens Institute. Melt spinning is a process used to create non-knit, non-woven fibers, such as filters for N95 masks. It will be used by researchers and engineers to better understand the materials used in the process and their properties.

Last week, DEVCOM CBC participated in , a large-scale, hands-on demonstration and field experimentation event sponsored by Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) Joint Science & Technology Office at Camp Dawson, West Virginia.
The event brought together scientists, engineers, technicians and warfighters in realistic mission scenarios to provide insight on the potential for future integration.

Shown in the photo from is the BlindSpot capability. The BlindSpot multiplex lateral flow immunoassay is inserted into a Modular Automated Colorimetric Analysis Widget (MACAW) assay reader. It can be quickly scanned and detect biological toxin threats, offering warfighters rapid threat identification in the field.
