Lowndesville FD (Station #4) and ANTREVILLE FIRE DEPT. (Station #3) stood by while the aircraft landed, patient care was transferred to Med-Trans One and safely lifted off for transport.

All ACFS units have returned to service.

These are great opportunities for our members to glean information, industry trends and network with others across the state on community risk reduction initiatives that we can bring back to keep Abbeville County safer.

Topics included - Tailored Fire Safety for High-Risk Populations, Good Data & It’s Importance, Community Risk Assessments, Prioritizing Risks, and Community Partnerships.

Today’s trip also included a visit to our South Carolina Firefighters’ Memorial which is always a poignant reminder.

Day #1 of the National Volunteer Fire Council Step Strong Challenge!

New for this year, they are offering a Team option for the competition and so typical of the we know Abbeville County folks have, we are in!

We have 32 members on our team registered (the most of any teams, imagine that! 😉).

So if you see your Abbeville County Firefighters out exercising a little more this month, give them a shout of encouragement or a honk of the horn and tell them to GET TO STEPPIN!

ERSKINE - Altruism - selfless concern for the well-being of others, without care for one's own interests; unselfishness.

We were proud to host two National Volunteer Fire Council courses today in partnership with Erskine College and Due West Fire-Rescue.

Volunteer Fire Service: Essential Strategies for Success and Building a Healthy & High-Performing Fire Department.

Altruism, the importance of investing in the mental and physical health of members, resources available through the NVFC and other organizations along with excellent discussion was enjoyed by all who attended.

We recommend folks signing up for the next NVFC Course being presented locally with our friends at Saluda County Fire Service on July 2nd here - https://nvfc.wufoo.com/forms/p1dojr6g1lxf4nr/

⚠️ TURN AROUND. DON’T DROWN. ⚠️

Floodwaters are one of the most dangerous weather hazards we face in South Carolina - and they can become deadly in seconds.

Just 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock a person down, and only 12 inches can carry away most vehicles. Nearly half of all flood-related deaths occur in vehicles because drivers attempt to cross flooded roads.

If you encounter standing water on a roadway:
🚫 DO NOT drive through it
🚫 DO NOT go around barricades
🚫 DO NOT risk your life to save a few minutes

Turn around and find another route. No destination is worth your life.

Abbeville County Fire-Rescue urges everyone to stay weather aware, use caution during heavy rain events, and remember:

WHEN FLOODED, FORGET IT.

This Memorial Day, we join the nation in honoring the courageous men and women who gave their lives in service to others.

What began as Decoration Day has become a solemn reminder of the cost of freedom and the enduring responsibility to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Across generations, Americans have paused on this day to reflect on lives dedicated to protecting others with courage, honor, and selfless devotion.

The fire service and military communities share a profound bond—one built on duty, sacrifice, and a commitment to serve something greater than oneself.

Today, we recognize that enduring bond. As members of the fire service, we pause to express our deepest gratitude to all who have made the ultimate sacrifice—and to the families and communities who carry their legacy forward.

We honor their legacy with unwavering respect.

Join us in remembering all who gave the last full measure of devotion - those who laid down their lives in defense of our nation, and those who served and died in the line of duty as members of the military fire service.

Their legacy lives on through the stories we share, the lives they touched, and the sacred places of remembrance as lasting tribute to service, sacrifice, and courage that will never be forgotten.

We honor. We remember. We will never forget.

DUE WEST - We wish to express our gratitude to South Carolina State Fire Assistant State Fire Marshal Nathan Ellis for his presentation today - “Emerging Challenges for Emergency Responders: Understanding the Hazards of Lithium-ion Batteries.”

This important class focused on the growing risks lithium-ion batteries present to emergency responders, including fire behavior, safety considerations, and response challenges involving modern technology and energy storage systems.

We also appreciate Erskine College for hosting the course and providing lunch for all attendees.

Lastly, thank you to South Carolina Emergency Management Division for assisting with facilitating and registration for this course and South Carolina State Firefighters' Association for pushing out announcements of this training also!
