Ziwa has another baby! This time it is our dear Laloyo who has given birth to her 4th calf to make our population now 52!

Remember we have translocated 4 to Ajai Wildlife Reserve & 4 to Kidepo Valley NP as well as introducing 8 from South Africa, meaning our rhino population has touched the big milestone of 60!

That’s 46 rhinos born in Ziwa between 2009 and 2026 for an average well over 2.5 calves/year! We are so proud of the success of this reintroduction program and the continued national repopulation program.

Spice in Ziwa!! 🦏🇺🇬

Today Ziwa had the honour of welcoming The Queen of Dancehall, the one and only Spice! She came today with the mission of laying eyes on the very rhino she has dedicated her lifetime support too and therefore has named: “Spice Nankula”.

Spice is now a part of Ziwa history and the family of Ziwa, we are excited to share Spice Nankula’s growth, friendships and experiences with her over her lifetime.

Spice is rhino conservation!

More pictures coming soon…

Last week was yet another historic moment in rhino conservation in Uganda 🇺🇬🦏

First up for the 400km journey to their new home, Kidepo Valley National Park, were Seiji (6) & Whittaker (6). They left Ziwa at around 11am on 17/03 and arrived at KVNP around 7pm.

Two days later we were at it again, this time Rae Ruparelia (5) & Unnamed Calf 41 (who is younger brother to Whittaker). This time they left earlier 9:30am on 19/03 but with some small issues on the way and time taken to ensure the animals welfare throughout the journey, they arrived in KVNP around 6pm.

For Ziwa, this is both a moment of intense pride but also a touch of sadness. 21 years of work. 40 years of family history. All has lead to the success of the reintroduction program in Uganda. Ziwa is proud to be the cornerstone for rhino translocation in Uganda, we shall endeavour to continue & improve our work so that in the coming decades we can restore independent rhino populations all over Uganda as they once were.

Last week, Ziwa lost 4 of its favourite sons. Where we have lost, Kidepo & the Karamajong people have gained something special. We have no doubts that Seiji, Whittaker, Ruparelia & Calf 41 shall thrive in their new environment.

A very special thank you to the various partners in this process:

And our main partner

The future at Ziwa is bright, the intimacy of the experience with our animals cannot be found anywhere else. Here, they are truly amongst us as if they are one of us.

PSA! Ziwa has yet another baby! Our young lady, Madam, has given us a surprise as she gave birth earlier than our experts suggested to a healthy baby boy.

This is the 2nd birth of the year and we are not slowing down as one of our senior ladies, Laloyo, is also due any day!

Yesterday, 1 September 2025, we were honoured to welcome H.E. Lisa Chesney MBE, the British High Commissioner to Uganda, to Ziwa Rhino & Wildlife Ranch together with the Executive Director of UWA, Dr James Musinguzi, and Ms Juliana Kagwa, CEO of UTB. From our gate-side greeting and signature welcome juice, the day unfolded beautifully.

At our HQ, pupils from Blessing Nursery and Primary School, a community partner we proudly support, treated our guests to a spirited performance that set the tone for a joyful visit. Afterward, our briefings were led by James (UWA Chief Warden at Ziwa) and Sharif (Head Ranger), before we set off into the bush for ethical rhino trekking. 🦏

We were privileged to encounter a serene crash featuring Moja (our adult male), two very young calves (under eight months, one will be named by Lisa herself!), another youngster around a year-and-a-half, and two females—observed quietly and left undisturbed. The children also had the thrill of meeting eleven of our giraffes 🦒 a moment they won’t forget.

Back at base, we toured our accommodation (our High Commissioner has already chosen her favourite for a future stay!), then shared breakfast with members of the press, UWA and UTB.

We’re deeply grateful to H.E. Lisa Chesney and the team from the British High Commission Marcella and Tremayne as well as to UWA and UTB for a successful and inspiring day. 🇺🇬🇬🇧

This visit is a perfect prelude to a national conservation milestone: the Rhino Naming Ceremony at Ziwa on 22 September 2025. We can’t wait to welcome you all back for this historic celebration of Uganda’s rhinos and the communities who protect them.
