Mbarara Zonal Agricultural Research Development Institute (MBAZARDI) is one of the nine Public Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institutes (ZARDIs) which were established through the NARS Act of 2005. Originally established in 1926 as a production centre for high quality livestock breed, the farm came under the jurisdiction of NARO in 1999. It was in 2000 promoted to an Agricultural Res

earch and Development Centre and in 2005 it became semi-autonomous Zonal Research and Development Institute. The Institute is responsible for carrying out applied and adaptive research in the South Western Agro Ecological Zone (SWAEZ).It covers thirteen districts of South Western Uganda which include: Mbarara, Isingiro, Ibanda, Kiruhura, Sheema, Bushenyi, Mitooma, Rubiriizi, Buhweju, Ntungamo, Sembabule, Rakai and Lyantonde. The Institute is located four miles from Mbarara Town, off the Mbarara - Bushenyi road. It currently occupies 336hectares.
