The Forum for Democratic Change Women League is launching the , it is a national campaign starting to save mothers who die while giving birth, we see no reason why women should continue dying while giving life to the citizenry of this country at the watch of the government. Most of these deaths emanate from lack of essential needs for safe child delivery, negligence and over bleeding which are all preventable in this era Global phenomenon. For 30 years, the death rate of women giving birth has been at 16 women per day, but the number has now increased to 19 women per day. This translates to 480 women per month and 5,760 annually and 172,800 in 30 years.
It is upon this background that we rally men and women, young and old who feel the pain of our dear mothers to contribute at 6200 Ugandans shillings to save the plight of the mothers. This mother could be your sister, mother, child, wife or neighbor. We have the duty as citizens to ensure that our mothers give birth safely and with dignity to womanhood without such humiliation.
Under the umbrella of FDC Women League, we urge Ugandans to mobilise funds to buy a Birth Kit to Ugandans mothers. We are also aware that most of the deaths are not captured by the health information management system which is the source of the maternal mortality statistics we are referring to.
One wonders how the mothers that die at home or on the way or never make it to a health facility are recorded or estimated. It has become public secret that due to bad governance that has derailed our health system, corruption and lack of government prioritisation Uganda is not on track to meet the fifth millennium Development Goal (MDG 5) target on maternal mortality., which is cutting maternal mortality ratio by 75% by 2015. We are telling those in government; please attend to the issues of health care before we (Ugandans Women) work on you. And we (Ugandans) know what to do. All Ugandans who feel for the mothers, your contribution counts!
