On this International Women’s Day, we honor the strength, resilience, and achievements of women across Uganda and the world. However, we cannot celebrate fully when Ugandan women continue to face oppression, violence, and injustice under a dictatorship that disregards their rights and dignity.
In a country where women should be empowered, they are instead silenced. Those who dare to speak out against corruption and bad governance are harassed, arrested, or brutalized. Mothers, daughters, and sisters are forced to live in fear while the regime uses intimidation, illegal detentions, and violence to suppress their voices.
Women are the backbone of Uganda’s economy, yet they remain economically marginalized, with limited access to resources and opportunities. Those in politics face repression, and those in the media or activism are constantly under threat. The brutality inflicted on women, from torture in safe houses to the unlawful imprisonment of female political activists, is a stain on our nation.
True empowerment of women is impossible under dictatorship. Uganda needs justice, democracy, and freedom for women to thrive. We call upon the international community, human rights organizations, and all Ugandans to stand in solidarity with the brave women who demand change.
Ugandan women deserve better. The struggle continues.
