📣 Since 2019, Iceland and UNICEF Uganda have built a strong partnership to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene services in refugee-hosting districts across the West Nile subregion. Through this collaboration, 69 schools and 17 health centres in five districts have been supported, reaching more than 124,000 beneficiaries, including 74,000 children.
🏫 Last week, we visited Terego District to see firsthand how improved access to clean water sources and sanitation facilities is making a difference in schools and health centres. We met with teachers, parents, and, most importantly, girls and boys who shared how these interventions have improved their school attendance and as a result, will hopefully contribute to better learning outcomes.
💧 We also saw how the programme extends beyond schools, with trained extension workers helping communities strengthen hygiene and sanitation practices at home. This means children can return each day to homes with improved sanitation facilities.
💉 At health centres, improved water, sanitation, and hygiene services deliver equally important benefits by strengthening infection prevention and control, helping protect both patients and health workers from preventable harm in healthcare settings.
🙏 A big thank you to UNICEF for organising a highly successful field visit, and to Terego District Local Government and the local communities for the warm welcome. 🇺🇬🇺🇳🇮🇸

📣 Sendiráð Íslands í Kampala hefur frá árinu 2019 átt í farsælu samstarfi við Barnahjálp Sameinuðu þjóðanna, UNICEF, á sviði vatns- og hreinlætismála á flóttamannasvæðum í fimm héruðum norðurhluta Úganda.
💧 Á þessum tíma hefur vatns- og hreinlætisaðstaða tekið stakkaskiptum í 69 skólum og 17 heilsugæslustöðvum, sem samanlagt veita um 124.000 einstaklingum þjónustu, þar af 74.000 börnum.
🤝 Við heimsóttum Terego, sem er eitt þessara héraða, í nýliðinni viku til að kynna okkur árangurinn af verkefninun og sjá með eigin augum þá uppbyggingu sem þar hefur átt sér stað.
🙏 Í samtölum okkar við fólkið á svæðinu, þar á meðal skólabörn, kom glöggt fram mikilvægi bættrar vatns- og hreinlætisaðstöðu. Hún stuðlar að bættri skólasókn, sérstaklega hjá unglingsstúlkum, og dregur úr sýkingarhættu á heilbrigðisstofnunum svo tvö dæmi séu nefnd. 🇺🇬🇺🇳🇮🇸
