Today, Uganda joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Metrology Day 2026 under the theme: "Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making." The celebrations happened at Hotel Africana in Kampala, spearheaded by Uganda National Bureau of Standards, an agency under the Ministry of Trade Industry and cooperatives uganda-MTIC
In her remarks, the Guest of Honour and Permanent Secretary, MTIC Ms. Lynette Bagonza emphasized the significance of accurate measurements saying they are instruments of fairness, accountability, confidence, and economic transformation.
She noted that reliable measurements are essential for building trust in policy making, strengthening consumer protection, promoting fair trade and advancing Uganda's industrialization and export agenda.
She added that accurate and reliable measurements are vital for ensuring that consumers receive the correct quantities, and qualities of goods and services, thereby enhancing confidence in Uganda's products, regulatory systems, and international trade competitiveness.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Chairperson of the National Standards Council, the Commissioner for Industry and Technology at MTIC and a member of the Council, Mr. Denis Ainebyona noted that strong metrology systems are critical in many sectors including manufacturing, Healthcare, agriculture, engineering, energy, telecommunications, environment protection and scientific research.
"An economy that cannot measure accurately can not industrialization with confidence, can not trade on equal terms with the rest of the world, and can not protect or earn the trust of its citizens"
He emphasized the fundamental importance of accurate measurements saying they are essential in promoting fair trade, protecting consumers, strengthening industries, and driving sustainable national development.
