The 2026 National International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Moot Court Competition is underway, bringing together law students from universities across Uganda to put their knowledge of humanitarian law to the test through simulated court proceedings.

Organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in partnership with the Uganda Red Cross Society, the competition provides a platform for future legal professionals to engage with real-world humanitarian issues and deepen their understanding of the laws that protect human dignity during armed conflict.

Today, the Embassy of Japan in Uganda held a strategic engagement meeting with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies () and the headquarters in Kampala.

The meeting provided an opportunity to strengthen collaboration, discuss shared humanitarian priorities, and explore areas of partnership in support of vulnerable communities across Uganda.

Diseases begin and end in communities.
As the frontline of public health, communities play a critical role in preventing and stopping disease outbreaks.

In Uganda’s border districts neighboring the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda Red Cross Society volunteers are working tirelessly to protect lives by intensifying risk communication and community awareness campaigns on Ebola Virus Disease.

Through door-to-door engagement, public education, and community mobilization, volunteers are empowering people with accurate information on prevention, early detection, and reporting of suspected cases. Their dedication is strengthening community resilience and serving as a vital line of defense against the spread of Ebola.

🚫🧤 If a person confirmed to have Ebola or suspected to have died from Ebola passes away, DO NOT handle or bury the body yourself.

⚠️ Ebola remains highly infectious after death and can spread through direct contact with the body.

👨‍⚕️🛡️ Only a trained Safe and Dignified Burial Team should handle the body.

Protect yourself, your family, and your community:

❌ Do not touch, wash, dress, or move the body.
📞 Immediately report the death to health authorities.

🚷 Keep others away until the trained burial team arrives.

⚠️ Unsafe burial practices can spread Ebola rapidly and cost more lives.

“Our collective response requires strong coordination, timely action, and trusted community engagement. We appreciate the Uganda Red Cross Society for the swift support and commitment demonstrated from the onset of this response,” said Dr. Innocent Mugume of Kabarole District.

The remarks were made during a coordination meeting held today to strengthen alignment on priority response pillars supporting the ongoing Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak response in the Rwenzori and Albertine regions.

Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) and the Kabarole Regional Public Health Operations Team convened the meeting, during which the National Society reaffirmed its commitment to supporting national response efforts through coordination, Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE), Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), surveillance, emergency response, psychosocial support, safe and dignified burials, volunteer mobilization, and cross-border screening.

The meeting underscored the critical importance of coordinated multi-sectoral efforts in strengthening preparedness, protecting communities, and stopping the spread of Ebola at the community level.

Can spread the virus from an infected person.

🧼 Wash hands regularly
