UWA Reviews SOPs to Strengthen Wildlife Disease Preparedness

Today, Uganda Wildlife Authority, in collaboration with World Wildlife Fund -Uganda and partners, is concluding a three-day technical workshop to review, update, and develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for wildlife and tourism.

The review focused on strengthening prevention, preparedness, and response to zoonotic disease outbreaks, including priority SOPs for prevention and outbreak management.

The initiative is part of the “Strengthening One Health-based Prevention, Preparedness and Response in the Greater Virunga Landscape” project, which aims to enhance Uganda’s capacity to protect wildlife, tourism and public health.

UWA-Board & Top Management Review Key Institutional Documents

Mbale, Uganda | 13 August 2026 — UWA Board of Trustees and top management are meeting in Mbale to review critical institutional documents that will shape the Authority’s operations and future growth.

The review, being held at Mount Elgon Hotel and Spa, covers the Finance Procedures Manual, Human Resource Manual and proposed organisational structure, among other key frameworks.

Board Chair Prof. James Kalema urged members to give the process their full attention and ensure the revised documents provide a strong, lasting foundation for UWA. He also sought an update on plans to relocate the Mount Elgon Conservation Area headquarters from Mbale to Tariet.

Executive Director Dr. James Musinguzi highlighted key recent conservation interventions, including engagements on Kidepo, Pian Upe’s controlled grazing program, and the conclusion of the IFPA-CD project.

The meeting also received updates on conservation operations in Mount Elgon, including the deployment of 400 UPDF personnel to support conservation efforts and progress towards establishing the Conservation Area headquarters at Tariet.

The review aims to harmonize UWA’s policies, systems, and structures to strengthen institutional effectiveness and position the Authority for its long-term conservation mandate.

UWA Boosts Community Conservation and Controlled Grazing in Pian Upe

Nakapiripirit, 10 August 2026 — The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has commissioned a Joint Operations Command Centre at Pian Upe Conservation Area to strengthen wildlife protection, law enforcement and real-time monitoring.

Supported by Space for Giants and Karamoja Overland Safaris, the centre uses technology, including the EarthRanger monitoring system, to enhance conservation operations. Surveillance aircraft, drones and patrol vehicles will further support ranger teams in detecting and responding to threats.

The facility was commissioned by the Minister for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Rt. Hon. (Rtd) Col. Tom Butime, who commended UWA and its partners for investing in modern conservation infrastructure.

The investment is expected to strengthen protection of Pian Upe’s wildlife, including the roan antelope, while supporting community conservation initiatives.

KARENGA LEADERS ENDORSE ELECTRIC FENCING TO ADDRESS HUMAN-WILDLIFE CONFLICT

Karenga, Uganda, August 6, 2026: Leaders and communities in Karenga District have unanimously endorsed the construction of electric fencing along hotspots bordering Kidepo Valley Conservation Area as part of efforts to curb the escalating human-wildlife conflict that has devastated livelihoods in the district.

The high-level stakeholder engagement, organized by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), was held at Bada Sudan Hotel and chaired by the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Rt. Hon. Col. (Rtd) Tom Butime. The meeting brought together the area's Member of Parliament, Hon. Datom Ben Koriang, Karenga District LC V Chairperson, district councilors, LC III chairpersons from sub-counties adjacent to the conservation area, technical leaders, and representatives of the local communities.

The meeting follows increasing reports of crop destruction, injuries, and deaths caused by wild animals straying from Kidepo Valley Conservation Area. The electric fencing project is being implemented following a directive from H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, with sections of Lokori already fenced.

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is participating in a multidisciplinary Wildlife Mortality Surveillance Training aimed at strengthening disease surveillance and early detection of zoonotic diseases within Uganda’s protected areas.

The five-day training, facilitated by Africa CDC and coordinated by the National One Health Platform, of which UWA is a member, is taking place at Hilton Garden Inn Kampala from 3rd to 7th August 2026. The UWA team is led by the Assistant Commissioner Veterinary Services Dr. Patrick Atimnedi.

The programme brings together selected officers and rangers to enhance their capacity to detect, investigate and report unusual wildlife mortality events that may signal the emergence of Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers (VHFs), including Ebola, and other zoonotic diseases.

The training will equip participants with skills in recognizing signs of zoonotic diseases in wildlife, safe carcass handling, data collection, use of disease reporting tools and application of the One Health approach to coordinated surveillance and response.

It also supports Uganda’s ongoing efforts to strengthen early warning systems at the wildlife–human interface by preparing rangers, who are often the first to encounter sick or dead wildlife in protected areas, for disease detection and timely reporting

African Wild Dogs Added to UWA's Ex-Situ Animals list.

UWA has introduced another animal species to the current ones at Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) in Entebbe.

This afternoon, two African Wild Dogs, male and female, were welcomed at UWEC, bringing the total number of animal species to 69. The wild dogs, donated by Conservation Through Commercialization (CTC), were received by Assistant Commissioner Geoffrey Mwedde on behalf of the Commissioner for Community Conservation and Ex-situ Wildlife Services, David Musingo.

Upon the release of the wild dogs into their new habitat, Thomas Price, the founder of CTC, stated that this collaboration aims to enhance national capacity for these endangered species.

Mr. Mwedde expressed gratitude to CTC for the collaboration, highlighting that this initiative represents a positive advancement for UWA and the Ugandan government in terms of conservation efforts. He remarked, "It is crucial for the government of Uganda to collaborate with the private sector to enhance wildlife conservation in this country."

Dr. Recheal, Assistant Commissioner Ex-situ Wildlife Management at UWA, explained that including wild dogs in UWA’s ex-situ services will boost research, conservation education, and tourism.

Yesterday, UWA engaged residents of Minekye Village in Sanga Sub-county as part of ongoing efforts to address human-wildlife conflict and to strengthen peaceful coexistence between wildlife and neighboring communities.

The meeting followed recent buffalo incursions that destroyed crops, particularly banana plantations, with residents raising concerns about the compensation process. UWA officials explained how compensation claims are verified and processed, while also updating the community on ongoing mitigation measures, including trench excavation and plans to construct an electric fence to prevent future wildlife incursions.

The community welcomed the engagement, appreciated UWA’s interventions, and expressed renewed hope that the measures being implemented will help reduce crop destruction. The meeting concluded with a joint inspection of the trench works and gardens recently damaged by buffaloes, reaffirming UWA’s commitment to protecting livelihoods while conserving Uganda’s rich wildlife heritage.

Over the past three days, UWA hosted journalists, digital influencers and content creators on a familiarization tour of Murchison Falls National Park as part of preparations for the Open Park Days 2026.

The participants experienced the park's breathtaking wildlife, boat cruises, game drives, the Top of the Falls, canopy walks, ziplining, cultural encounters and world-class hospitality, equipping them to share authentic stories that inspire more Ugandans to explore their national parks.

Through this initiative, UWA is harnessing the power of digital storytelling to promote domestic tourism, strengthen appreciation for conservation and encourage more Ugandans to experience the beauty of their natural heritage.
