The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Databank (NAGRC & DB), was established by an Act of Parliament, the Animal Breeding Act, 2001. It is a body corporate mandated to take a leading role in establishing a comprehensive National Animal Breeding Programme in Uganda. NAGRC was established to cater for conservation of the indigenous breeds that are adapted to the local environment at the s

ame time address the need for higher yielding breeds with market driven goals. It is for these reasons that the breeding role like other vital roles which include among others disease control and regulatory roles cannot be left entirely to the private sector.

National Animal Genetic Resource Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB) congratulates His Excellency Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni upon his re-election and swearing-in ceremony.

In this term and beyond, National Animal Genetic Resources Centre & Data Bank - Nagrc&db will guarantee the success of the Parish Development Model by ensuring a steady subsidized and reliable supply of farmer preferred breeding stock of high performing dairy and beef cattle, fast maturing goats and pigs, multi-purpose chicken and fish fingerlings.

The agency will also maintain its efforts to cover the whole country with artificial insemination services for targeted genetic improvement of the national herd, conservation of indigenous genetics for biodiversity stability as well as building capacity for production of quality and affordable animal feeds.

Closing World Veterinary Week 2026

As the celebrations conclude in Bukedea District, the National Animal Genetic Resource Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB) has strengthened livestock service delivery through the distribution of liquid nitrogen and semen straws to the District Local Government and Artificial Insemination technicians.
National Animal Genetic Resources Centre & Data Bank - Nagrc&db is mandated to conserve, improve and sustainably utilize animal genetic resources.
This intervention will support the scale-up of artificial insemination services, improving access to quality genetics and enhancing livestock productivity at farm level.

NAGRC&DB at – Bukedea
The National Animal Genetic Resource Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB) is participating in the World Veterinary Week celebrations taking place from 21st–24th April 2026 at Emokori Grounds, Bukedea District, under the theme:
“Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health.”
The event was officially opened by the Mayor of Bukedea District, with the main celebrations scheduled for Friday, 24th April 2026, to be officiated by the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among.

National Animal Genetic Resources Centre & Data Bank - Nagrc&db is mandated to conserve, improve and sustainably utilize animal genetic resources.
In line with this mandate, our veterinarians are engaging farmers through practical trainings on:

• Animal breeding and reproductive technologies
• Animal health and disease control
• Food safety standards
• Improved farm management practices
Farmers and stakeholders are encouraged to visit the NAGRC&DB exhibition space to learn more about our services and innovations aimed at transforming Uganda’s livestock sector.

This week marked the conclusion of a tour of government farms and ranches by the Board of Directors of National Animal Genetic Resource Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB).
The exercise provided an opportunity for the Board to assess ongoing operations, infrastructure development, and service delivery across the Centre’s establishments.

The visits enabled direct engagement with technical teams on the ground, offering valuable insights into progress made in livestock breeding, genetic improvement, and farm management systems.

The Board reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening institutional performance, enhancing productivity, and ensuring that National Animal Genetic Resources Centre & Data Bank - Nagrc&db continues to deliver on its mandate of availing improved animal genetic resources for national development.
