Our orphanage in rural Eastern Uganda (Bugiri District) has become a beacon of safety for children rescued from streets and unsafe homes, yet rising costs for medical care and clean water threaten the stability we've worked so hard to build. R**e and child violence, including sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, remain significant concerns in Uganda, with eastern Uganda facing particularly high rates in certain forms of violence. Eastern Uganda encompasses regions like Busoga, Bugisu, Teso, and parts of Karamoja, where cultural practices, poverty, conflict legacies, and limited access to services exacerbate the problem. While data is often aggregated at the national level, regional breakdowns from surveys highlight elevated risks in the east, especially for physical violence and female ge***al mutilation/cutting (FGM/C). Note that "defilement" is the legal term in Uganda for sexual offenses against children under 18, which includes r**e.

Spreading Holiday Joy: Wama Development Foundation Africa's Heartwarming Christmas Initiative
As the holiday season approaches, WDFA's compassionate staff embodied the true spirit of giving with a touching Christmas giveaway. Rallying together, the team embarked on a collective shopping spree, pooling their resources to purchase an array of colorful, warm clothing items tailored for the orphanage's youngest residents. From cozy sweaters and festive scarves to sturdy shoes and playful outfits, every selection was made with care, ensuring the children would not only stay comfortable during the cooler months but also feel the warmth of community love wrapped around them.
The upcoming giveaway, slated for mid-December 2025, isn't just about new outfits; it's a beacon of hope amid challenges like poverty and limited access to basic needs in our orphanage school/home.
