In the beginning of June, the archeological survey on the site of the Great City Synagogue in Lviv starts.

The site of the ruined Great City Synagogue is currently unnoticed within the city’s public space. Conservation of the foundations with the marking will make the site noticeable and will allow citizens and visitors to see the location within the space.

The exhibition by a photographer Jason Francisco “The Golden Rose” opened in the IconArt Modern Art Gallery / Iconart Галерея сучасного сакрального мистецтва. According to the author, it is “a visual and textual meditation on time, loss, and memory in connection with the site of the Golden Rose in Lviv, Ukraine, once one of the most famous synagogues of Europe.” It is the second display for the exhibition in Lviv – in 2015, it was presented on the square near the city’s armory, on the metal fence enclosing the remains of the Golden Rose synagogue, where the Space of Synagogues was later made.

The exhibition offers the large-format photography, drawing, and writing, in a series of toned gelatin silver prints. Current exhibition will be available in the gallery until July, 15 – welcome to see!

Вчора в Iconart Галерея сучасного сакрального мистецтва відкрилась виставка фотографа Джейсона Франциско "Золота Роза". За словами автора, “це візуальна і текстуальна спроба погляду на час, втрату та пам’ять, яка пов’язана із Золотою Розою у Львові, однією із найвідоміших синагог у Європі”.

Виставка вже вдруге експонується у Львові – в 2015 р. вона була представлена на площі біля міського арсеналу, на металевому паркані, яким було огороджено залишки синагоги Золота Роза і де згодом з’явився Простір синагог (детально: https://goo.gl/Asi9Y7).

На виставці в "Iconart" представлено великоформатні фотографії, рисунки та тексти, виконані в техніці тоновано срібного желатинового друку і їх можна оглянути до 15 липня. Рекомендуємо завітати (вул. Вірменська, 26)!

On May 30, the President of Germany Frank Walter Steinmeier paid an official visit to Lviv. Accompanied by Lviv city mayor Andriy Sadovyi and a head of Lviv office of the GIZ project "Integrated Development of Ukrainian Cities" Ms. Oksana Oliynyk, Mr. Steinmeier visited historical landmarks of Lviv renovated in cooperation with GIZ Ukraine, and also attended the restored memorial site “The Space of Synagogues” arranged in place of the ruined Jewish sacred place. In conclusion, city mayor presented him a book about Lviv and a jubilee coin of King Danylo of Galicia.

30 травня президент Німеччини Франк-Вальтер Штайнмаєр відвідав з офіційним візитом Львів. У супроводі мера Львова Андрія Садового та керівника львівського офісу проекту GIZ "Інтегрований розвиток міст України" пані Оксана Олійник пан Штайнмаєр оглянув історичні пам’ятки Львова, відреставровані у співпраці з GIZ Ukraine, а також відвідав відновлений меморіальний «Простір Синагог», що постав на місці зруйнованої єврейської святині.На завершення - отримав у подарунок від міського голови Андрій Садовий книгу про Львів та ювілейну монету Короля Данила

One year since the opening the Space of Synagogues became a convivial public space for locals and visitors of the city, even though few vandalisms took place there. A place became a part of the city.

A thoughtful, critical and important article on culture of remembrance, especially in state-involved institutions in Ukraine. As one of positive examples, the author Lizaveta German (art critic from Kyiv) brings The Space of Synagogues. He article deals with many examples and allows seeing how this project relates to other initiatives in Ukraine. More generally Lizavetta addresses critical and challenging issues of contemporary usage of the past in society and especially by state funded institutions and initiatives. Yesterday, two stelas from the memorial Perpetuation installation were vandalized with the N**i symbols and inscriptions.

Office for Protection of Historical Heritage engaged the experts to erase the captions and not to damage the surface of stelas. A police investigation was launched and is based on video surveillance. Police and municipal group are searching for vandals. We will update as soon as new information will be available.

It is another reminder for us to continue developing the dialogue among the contemporaries and the past to commemorate and memorialize the shared history of the city, history of Jews and the Holocaust.

Вчора дві стели меморіальної інсталяції "Увіковічення" були обписані нацистською символікою та написами.

Управління охорони історичного середовища разом з фахівцями вже працюють над тим, щоб стерти написи і не пошкодити поверхню стел. На базі відео з камер спостереження було розпочате розслідування. Поліція й муніципальна дружина займаються пошуком хуліганів. Повідомимо, коли з'явиться нова інформація.

Це додаткове нагадування про те, що потрібно й далі працювати над діалогом між сучасниками і минулим щодо вшанування й пам’ятання спільної історії міста, історії євреїв та Голокосту.

The Space of Synagogues was filled with sounds of old Jewish prayer songs and melodies on Friday, June 2. Grace concert was held during the LvivKlezFest
The songs sounded in Yiddish, Hebrew and Ukrainian and were performed by artists from four countries: Svetlana Kundish (Ukraine / Israel) and Patrick Farrel (USA), Aleksei Rozov (Russia), Varnitshkes (Ukraine), Natalya Vakshynska Project (Ukraine), Eleonora Razgon (Ukraine), "Sheine-Meidelakh" (Ukraine)

Звуки давніх єврейських молитовних пісень й мелодій заповнили Простір Синагог в п’ятницю, 2 червня. Пісні звучали на їдиші, івриті та українською мовою. Концерт-молитва проходив в рамках LvivKlezFest і в ньому взяли участь виконавці з чотирьох країн: Світлана Кундиш (Україна / Ізраїль) та Патрік Фаррелл (США), Олексій Розов (Росія), ансамбль "Varnitshkes" (Україна), "Natalya Vakshynska Project" (Україна), Елеонора Разгон (Україна), "Шейне-Мейделах" (Україна)

Today is the 94th birthday of the most active representative of the Jewish community in Lviv and the oldest native Yiddish speaker in the city Borukh–Borys Dorfman / Борух- Борис Дорфман. Happy birthday to him! We wish him good health and would like to thank him for his continuous support and advocacy of the Space of Synagogues!

During the three weeks, Lviv is going to host the LvivKlezFest, an international festival of Jewish music and culture. It is the ninth time the festival is taking place. It has a very intense program with concerts, excursions along the Jewish district (also in English), workshops, and the concluding open-air gala concert on the Rynok square.
Within the festival, two more unique exhibitions are taking place – the "Hebrew World" (Lviv National Art Gallery) and a photo exhibition "The Jews Who Brought Fame to Lviv" installed in the open air within the Space of Synagogues.

Впродовж трьох тижнів у Львові триватиме LvivKlezFest - міжнародний фестиваль єврейської музики і культури. Цей фестиваль відбувається вже вдев'яте і має дуже насичену програму: концерти, екскурсії єврейським кварталом (в тому числі англійською), воркшопи і завершиться великим гала-концертом просто неба на Площі ринок.
