Copyright Society of Zanzibar COSOZA is The Government institution dealing with copyright protection and registration of artistic works

The Copyright Society of Zanzibar (COSOZA) is an institution that was formed in 2003 through the Parliament Act No. 14 of 2003 section 38, (Copyright Act). (in this Act referred to as the "Society")

COSOZA is seconded under the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs. specifically to deal with national and international copyright protection and management, (which includes documentation an

d registration of copyright works in the country including providing protection of the copyright works)

What is Copyright?

“Copyright” means the sole legal right to print, publish, perform film or record a literally or artistic or musical work;

“Related rights" means the secondary right of copyright which performers, producers of phonograms and broadcasting organizations are entitled

COSOZA FUNCTIONS

COSOZA’s role, power and functions stipulated under Section 39 and 40 of the Copyright Act, No. 14 of 2003 of the Laws of Zanzibar.

-One of such functions is to promote and protect RIGHTS of rights holders, in particular to collect and distribute royalties in respect of use of the rights holders’ works.

-Another function is to maintain registers of works, productions and associations of authors, performers, producers of sound recordings broadcasters and publishers and etc.
