The EAC and the Government of Germany have today launched the 2nd edition of the EAC Artificial Intelligence Challenge ( ), expanding opportunities for young people, researchers and entrepreneurs across all 8 EAC Partner States to gain AI skills and build solutions to real regional challenges.

The EAC and Germany have kicked off Development Cooperation Negotiations in Arusha, paving the way for renewed cooperation to advance regional trade, economic integration and sustainable development across East Africa.

The EAC delegation was led by the Secretary General, Amb. Stephen P. Mbundi and steered by the Deputy Secretaries- General while the German delegation was headed by Mr Joachim Schmitt, Head of the Central and East Africa Division at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The discussions focused on Germanyโ€™s support to the EACโ€™s 7th Development Strategy, with negotiations expected to set the priorities for the next phase of EAC-Germany development cooperation.

๐Ÿ”น The EAC is strengthening public-private partnerships to unlock the regionโ€™s trade and investment potential and accelerate economic transformation.

Speaking at the EABC CEO Trade and Investment Roundtable in Dar es Salaam, EAC Secretary General Hon. Amb. Stephen P. Mbundi emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between governments, regional institutions and the private sector to address barriers limiting trade.

In 2025, the EAC recorded total trade of US$156.7 billion, including US$19.7 billion in intra-EAC trade, highlighting significant opportunities to deepen regional commerce.

โ˜˜๏ธThe EAC continues to prioritise the removal of non-tariff barriers, improved connectivity and expanded access to finance to boost competitiveness and trade.

The EAC Secretary General, Amb. Stephen Mbundi, today received H.E. Mikami Yoichi, Ambassador of Japan to the United of Republic of Tanzania, for a courtesy call at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha.

The two discussed opportunities to advance cooperation in regional integration, infrastructure development, trade facilitation and capacity building.

โ˜˜๏ธToday, the East African Community (EAC) officially launched the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) as the EAC Regional Centre of Excellence in Virology in Entebbe, Uganda, marking a major milestone in strengthening East Africaโ€™s health security and collective preparedness against infectious disease outbreaks.

The event was officiated by Ugandaโ€™s Prime Minister and Leader of Government Business, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja. EACโ€™s Deputy Secretary General in represented the EAC on behalf of the Secretary General.

๐Ÿ”นThe Centre will serve as a regional hub for advanced virology research, specialised laboratory training, disease surveillance, diagnostics and knowledge sharing, strengthening the regionโ€™s capacity to prevent, detect and respond to cross-border health threats, including Ebola, Marburg and other emerging and re-emerging viral diseases.
๐Ÿ”นIt will also foster scientific collaboration, innovation and the sharing of expertise across EAC Partner States.
