本所籌備處成立於1962年10月，並於1970年2月正式成所，至今已逾60年。
目前共有30多位研究人員，研究領域包括 : 經濟理論、經濟計量理論與實證、總體經濟與貨幣理論、公共經濟、國際貿易與金融、區域與產業經濟、農業及天然資源與環境經濟、人口與勞動經濟，以及醫療與福利經濟等。
