Recently, there is a trend of building a foundation model for different modalities, ranging from text, image, to audio. In this talk, Dr. Wang will discuss his recent work on building a pre-trained model for symbolic music data (a type of representation that represents musical contents with music notations, e.g., music scores, MIDI files, etc.), along with the general idea, purpose, challenges, and possibilities of building a foundation model for symbolic music. Dr. Wang will also share his experiences as a Ph.D student and a researcher.

Back in 1988, game trees for chess were among the largest search structures in real-world computing. Because such trees are too large to evaluate exhaustively, chess programs must rely on heuristic strategic decisions based on partial information—making them a powerful case study for teaching AI search. In one of his lectures that year on AI search for games and puzzles, Professor Hans Berliner — a pioneer in computer chess — stated: “Intelligent heuristics are the future of computing.”

As a student of computing theory, I was naturally perplexed but fascinated by this perspective. I had been trained to believe that "algorithms and computational complexity theory are the foundation of computer science." And yet, my own journey to understand heuristics in computing has played a defining role in my career as a theoretical computer scientist. Over time, I’ve come to appreciate Berliner's statement as a far-reaching worldview—one that resonates even more in our current era of rich, complex, and multifaceted data and models, where computing interacts deeply with science, engineering, the humanities, and society.

In this talk, I will reflect on my experiences with heuristics in computing, highlighting examples of theoretical work aimed at understanding the behavior of heuristics on real data, as well as efforts to design practical heuristics with meaningful theoretical foundations. My hope is that these insights—drawn from techniques such as spectral partitioning, multilevel methods, the simplex method, and regularization for optimization and machine learning—can shed light on, and perhaps inspire, a deeper understanding of the current and future techniques in AI and data mining.

The digitization of everyday life presents both challenges and opportunities for human-centered research. An increasing mismatch between theoretical constructs and their practical measures has prompted researchers to develop novel methods, permitting observations that were previously impossible. Among these new approaches, this talk focuses on Digital Trace Data (DTD) and its application in multimodal research. It will explore case studies in areas such as smartphone behavior, social media linkage analysis, and human-AI interaction. These cases illustrate how the research community is collectively building a comprehensive toolkit and methodological repertoire, laying the foundation for understanding the structure and "language" of human behavior.

【學術演講】Tree Evaluation and Simulating Time with Space

In this talk, I will explore recent results surrounding a breakthrough advance in simulating time with space on multi-tape Turing machines as first shown in [Wil25]. I will introduce the Tree Evaluation problem [CMWBS10], show the naive algorithm, and then the improved algorithm put forth by Cook and Mertz [CM24] in O(log n loglog n) space. I will explain how Williams uses this algorithm to simulate a time t multi-tape Turing machine in O([]sqrt{ t log t }) space, and conclude by looking at the results of a recent paper by Shalunov [Sha25] that shows how to evaluate circuits of size s in O([]sqrt{ s log s }) space using the same improved Tree Evaluation algorithm.

Quantum computing is no longer a distant dream, its rapid progress is poised to revolutionize various fields. However, this leap forward comes with a critical caveat: the pre-quantum public-key cryptographic algorithms that secure our digital infrastructure today, such as RSA and ECC, are at risk of being broken. With the rise of quantum capabilities, everything from encryption keys to biometric data could become vulnerable to adversaries.
The race is on to transition to quantum-safe cryptography before quantum computers reach a critical threshold. At the heart of this global effort lies Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC), the new generation of cryptographic algorithms believed to be both quantum and classically secure. Organizations like NIST are leading international efforts to standardize these algorithms.
This talk explores the challenges and innovations in transitioning to PQC, with a special focus on the role of hardware implementation and evaluation in ensuring both performance and security. It will take a deep dive into the Hamming Quasi-Cyclic (HQC) algorithm, one of the candidates selected for standardization by NIST in 2025, and examine how HQC performs under practical constraints and potential side-channel threats.

We've moved way beyond the old days of building discovery, recommendation, decision support, and other AI tools using traditional ML and pattern recognition techniques. The future of universal personal assistance for discovery and learning is upon us. How will multimodality image, video, and audio understanding, and reasoning abilities of large foundation models change how we build these systems? I will shed some initial light on this topic by discussing 3 trends: First, the move to a single multimodal large model with reasoning abilities; Second, the fundamental research on personalization and user alignment; Third, the combination of System 1 and System 2 cognitive abilities into a single universal assistant.

Understanding how personality influences learning is key to optimizing programming education. In this talk, I present a series of studies exploring how physiological signals, note-taking behaviors, and system operation patterns can be leveraged to assess personality traits and adapt instructional strategies accordingly. Using wearable sensors, we found significant correlations between heart rate variability, galvanic skin response, and Big Five personality traits—especially extraversion and conscientiousness. Further, by tailoring programming materials based on these traits, students demonstrated significantly greater learning gains. In a parallel study, we analyzed students’ note-taking and programming behaviors in a front-end development course and achieved over 89% classification accuracy in predicting conscientiousness and openness using a two-layer random forest model. These results reveal a promising direction toward objective, scalable, and adaptive programming education based on students' individual learning styles and personality traits.
