The Consulate General of Sweden in Istanbul is located in the Swedish Palace on Istiklal Caddesi 247 in the historic district of Pera/Beyoğlu, on the oldest Swedish Government property abroad, acquired in 1757. The current Palace was built in 1870, thus celebrating 150 years in 2020. The fundamental mission of the Consulate General, with the assistance of four Honorary Consulates in Antalya, Alanya, Izmir and Mersin, is to provide consular services for Swedish citizens in the whole of Türkiye except for the two provinces Ankara and Konya. In addition to representing the Government of Sweden in Istanbul, the main areas of activity for the Consulate are promoting Sweden and its culture and values, supporting Swedish companies on the Turkish market as an active member of Team Sweden in Türkiye, and supporting civil society, mainly in the areas of democracy and human rights including gender equality. The Consulate also handles migration issues such as applications for visas and residency and work permits in Sweden, for applicants from all of Türkiye. The Consulate has staff deployed from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Culture, Swedish Migration Agency and the Swedish National Police, as well as locally employed staff. Since 1962, the Consulate hosts the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul (SRII). Its primary aim is promoting Swedish and Nordic research about Turkey and the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Director is accredited as a Consul. Also, the head of Business Sweden’s office is accredited as a Trade Attaché at the Consulate. Karin Hernmarck is Consul General since 15 August 2025.

August is crayfish month, and crayfish equals feast in Sweden! 🇸🇪🎉

Here’s your recipe for a successful crayfish party:

🦞 Eat the crayfish outdoors (because of smell 👃).

🌝 Hang gaily coloured paper lanterns round the table – preferably in the shape of a moon.

🥳 Make people wear silly paper hats on their heads and bibs round their necks – it’s more or less compulsory.

🎵 Prepare some simple drinking songs that everyone can sing along to.

Have you wondered how drinking from a carton ever became a thing? 🫣 The reason is spelled Tetra Pak – a Swedish brand 🇸🇪 based on an invention from 1944.

Inventor Erik Wallenberg had a simple, yet brilliant idea: fold a paper tube at both ends at right angles… and you get a tetrahedron, a tiny pyramid with four sides that you can fill with, say, milk. 💡

Space-saving and cost-effective to produce, it also doesn’t break if you happen to drop it on the floor. 😅
By 1951, entrepreneur Ruben Rausing had patented the tetrahedron and launched Tetra Pak, today a global giant within food processing and packaging. 🥛

It’s Stockholm Pride this week 🏳️‍🌈 Stockholm Pride highlights everyone’s right to live openly and in safety and be treated with respect – regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
Sweden has come far in its work to safeguard equal rights and opportunities for LGBTIQ persons. Yet challenges remain. Many members of the LGBTIQ community are still reluctant to live openly, and many are subjected to discrimination, hate crimes and honour-based oppression.

The Government remains committed to its work to promote equal rights, equal opportunities and robust protections for members of the LGBTIQ community – in Sweden and abroad.

“The Government’s stance is clear: in our country, everyone should be able live their life openly and in safety, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression,” says Minister for Gender Equality Nina Larsson.

In Motala, Sweden, plastic packaging is getting a second life. Site Zero is the world’s largest sorting facility for plastic packaging. Here, up to 200,000 tonnes of plastic packaging can be sorted every year.
Using advanced technology, plastic is separated into 12 different material streams, making it possible for more packaging to be recycled instead of being incinerated.

The goal is simple: keep valuable materials in circulation for longer and reduce the need for virgin fossil-based plastics.
