🔖Back in October 2021 (8.10.2021 and 29.10.2021) here in Ukraine the key staff of NGO “Educatio” together with the direct participants of the previously conducted local need assessment organized and conducted 2 local meetings as one of the follow-up micro-projects after the need assessment activity.

➡The main aim of these 2 follow-up meetings was to raise awareness of locals (both migrants and natives) about the challenges that domestic (internal) and international (external) migrants face, moving to another city and exactly to our city; about their need and way of getting adapted, included and integrated into the local infrastructure, urban, social and cultural spaces. Afterwards this knowledge might be helpful both for the newcomers, moving to our city, and to the locals (natives and “already adapted migrants”) to raise the efficiency of adaptation, inclusion and integration of the newcomers (migrants) into the local infrastructure, urban, social and cultural spaces.

1️⃣👨‍💼The first meeting was a “Digital Exhibition” in the conference hall of the local Crimean federal university named after V.I. Vernadsky, where the participants of the need assessment (domestic migrants) showed some of their taken during the need assessment activity (Photo-walk) pictures and shared the personal stories behind. Thanks to the facility of a big screen in the conference hall and the structured sequence of questions, pictures and personal stories during the need assessment, the participants of the digital exhibition could follow several personal “hero’s journeys”, presented in pictures and the stories behind each picture from the initial decision or need to move (migrate) to another city (“call for adventure”) till facing the biggest challenges or getting adapted, included and integrated into the local infrastructure, urban, social and cultural spaces (“becoming the master of two worlds” and “returning with special knowledge”).

2️⃣🙋‍♀️The second meeting was conducted in a more non-formal atmosphere. It was a debriefing seminar after the digital exhibition, where the direct participants of the need assessment (domestic migrants) and other participants of the seminar shared their thoughts, ideas, emotions and other reflections on the digital exhibition conference and generally on the issue of adaptation, inclusion and integration of migrants into the local infrastructure, urban, social and cultural spaces.

👫Around 65 participants took part in this follow-up micro-project and attended these 2 meetings (digital exhibition and seminar).

The Need Assessment Reflective Tool "Photo-Walk".

This need assessment reflective tool "Photo-Walk" is specifically created for internal and external migrants, refugees, newcomers in the city/country.

The main aim of this reflective exercise is to help migrants to adapt to the new place for living. The tool is based on the concept of the monomyth (J. Campbell) and the method of ecotherapy (B. Plotkin), combined with the Participatory photography method.

Aims of the tool:

to equip professional educators working with adults at risk of exclusion (migrants) with a new efficient need assessment and reflection tool;
to introduce a unique reflective exercise to migrants, which can help them to adapt to the new living circumstances in a new place;
to reflect on the new living circumstances in a new place and, therefore, to realize personal needs and safe spaces in the city.
Description of the tool.

This document describes and gives a specific example of the reflective exercise, the main idea of which is to help migrants to adapt to the new place for living, to its urban, social, and cultural peculiarities.

This exercise is based on the concept of the monomyth/the Hero’s Journey (Joseph Campbell) and the method of ecotherapy (Bill Plotkin), combined with the Participatory photography method.

It could be used both by trainers and facilitators to conduct this photo-walk with a group of migrants or by migrants themselves (individually) to become more aware of their needs, expectations, objectives, fears, personal treats, etc. connected to their move to the new city/country.

To accomplish this exercise, the participant has to take any camera (the quality doesn’t matter), get questions (see below), and set for a stroll. The task is to think over the proposed questions and take a photo of a place/people/event in the city, which reflects their thoughts about a concrete question – to find a photo-answer on each question and reflect on it. All the questions refer to the two different dimensions at the same time – the participant may reflect on the part of his life's journey, he’s currently in (this is an abstract dimension), or on the concrete particular journey here and now (this is a physical dimension), or on both dimension, of course. The following questions were consequently developed according to the main stages/checkpoints of the Hero’s journey concept and adjusted to the concrete Participatory photography method, devoted to the need assessment of adaptation, inclusion, and integration into the local infrastructure, urban, social and cultural spaces. Here there are:
1. Why am I here, in this city, in this place, with these people? How have I got here?
2. How complicated/challenging was it to decide to start this “journey” to this city? What were the obstacles? Why did I finally make a decision and now I’m here?
3. Do I have any fears, anxiety, concerns related to this city, cultural and social spaces? When has this feeling appeared? What is it about?
4. When has my acquaintance with this city started? What do I expect from this “journey”? Do I have a goal (or goals) in this way? What is it?
5. Am I ready to overcome the obstacles on the way to my goal? How many efforts am I ready to make?
6. Are there any people next to me, who are ready to support me, to help? Are there any places in this city, where I feel safe, calm, confident, relaxed? Who are these people, what are these places?
7. What knowledge and skills (or, maybe, it is more about emotions, feelings, impressions) do I want to obtain during this “journey” to this city? Or, maybe, do I want to get rid of something and to move further?
8. What in this city, in these cultural and social spaces, is my biggest challenge? What is the most complicated for me?
9. What do I miss in this city to feel safe, calm, confident, relaxed?
10. What is there at the end of this adventure? What will happen, when I overcome all the obstacles in this city, in these new cultural and social spaces? What kind of person will I become?

If the Photo-Walk is done in a group, the facilitator finalizes it with a debriefing in the following way: participants share all the photo materials, gathered during the task completion. Then present them the poster with the Hero’s journey scheme and explain Joseph Campbell’s idea of the monomyth. Then ask all the participants to mark their position in their journey (abstract, physical, or both), as they feel it, on the poster. In this way, the facilitators and participants get the idea of everybody’s position in their personal hero’s journey and the visualization of the whole group’s position. Then make a circle and share emotions and thoughts after the exercise.

So, after exploring this document you’ll get a unique tool for working with migrants and helping them to integrate into the new urban, social and cultural conditions. Moreover, you can adjust this tool for your own needs and expand the spheres of its use.

“Is there anyone next to me, who is ready to support me and help? What are the places in this city, where I feel safe, calm, confident, relaxed? What do I miss in this city in order to feel safe, calm, confident, relaxed?...”🌠

All the last week and during two meetings 25 psychological department students, 18-23 years old, domestic migrants who came here to start their higher education studies, were seeking answers about their experience and life here in Simferopol.

On the first introductory meeting, the participants got to know each other in the group and got the task to be completed within the next several days. After the introductory meeting, the participants for several days were walking in a city, reflecting on the questions and seeking the photo answers on those questions, being proposed by us.

All the reflective questions were consequently developed according to the main stages/checkpoints of the Hero’s journey concept (the idea of monomyth by J. Campbell) and adapted to the concrete Participatory photography method, devoted to the need assessment of adaptation, inclusion and integration of domestic migrants into the local infrastructure, urban, social and cultural spaces.

On the second debriefing meeting we looked through and shared with each other all the photo materials, gathered during the task completion. Then we presented the poster with the Hero’s journey scheme and explained the Joseph Campbell’s idea of the monomyth. After all, we asked all the participants to mark their position in their own “journey” to this city as they feel it on the poster. In this way, we all (the facilitators and participants) got the idea of everybody’s position in their personal hero’s journey and the visualization of the whole group’s position.

Thus, as an outcome, there are many photos and stories which we suppose will be interesting and helpful to many students, coming to our city in the future.
But for now, one of the ideas to sum it all up: it is very important to view everything that you are going through in this period of your life as a challenge and adventure…. Or a journey, if you wish.🌄
You might be in the very beginning, taking the challenge, stepping into the unknown…having lots of excitement, expectations and hopes… or maybe fears?
Or somewhere in the middle, already have overcome some difficulties, gained some skills and kind of know your way around the city, studies and hostel life, although still feeling lost and unsure sometimes…especially when realizing how much more is ahead?
You might be closer to the end of this adventure: grown, confident in many ways, maybe even feeling like a completely new, different personality…curious or a bit anxious about the future challenges?
💭Now think of your favorite fairy tale, film, story…Ask yourself, does the main character (the hero) ever have an easy journey? ..If it were easy, it wouldn’t be so precious, after all.✨

There is definitely a lot more to say, and very soon we will be sharing these outcomes in our follow up micro-projects!
Stay tuned! 😉

We gathered again in enchanting city of Bursa to learn more about methods and tools we aim to spread in order to empower future change-makers‼️Creating safe and diveres cities isn’t possible without involving inhabitants themselves and taking their true needs into consideration.

During the time here we want to deeply rethink the idea of empowerment, improve and adjust methods of creative and innovative need assessment to the needs and possibilities of our own communities. Those will be the tools we will use after the project to foster civil engagement in our cities.

we’re going on with implementing various social activities on the local level.

On 24th of April, we conducted a full day educative and psychotherapeutic group training devoted to relations and emotional distance in relations. The topic of the group training was chosen particularly according to the community needs’ assessment and was orientated on the adult education and adult target group. As a result, we gathered 11 participants from 18 to 45 from several cities of our region, willing to personally develop themselves and find the solutions of various issues in their interpersonal relations. Within the training we did several exercises and played some games to build connection and trust inside the group; made an individual practical assignment with the help of projective method “The Cactus” to uncover, think over and analyze one’s own interpersonal relations and emotional distance in his couple, then discussed the results in pairs and in a group; provided the participants with a block of theoretical information related to the topic; based on theoretical information gave the participants the guide for interpretation and analysis of the projective method’s results, being obtained; had a nice lunch and informal chat altogether; finished with a group psychotherapy, psychotherapeutic “aquarium” and group reflection and feedback.

In March 2021 there was held a meeting of a psychological club "Accessible Psychology" where the representatives of EDUCATIO-Ukraine presented to the audience the concept of DIGITAL STORYTELLING as a tool of giving voice to marginalized groups.

Not only did we discuss the ever-growing tendency to use digital tools in our daily life but also focused on the opportunity to use it for the sake of self-improvement, raising awareness, solving various social issues and drawing attention towards acute modern problems in the local area.

The main 7 stages of digital storytelling were introduced, and an example of a short video-film was shown in order to illustrate the power of this technology and its potential for adults in raising their well-being potential.
Along with the deep social function the videos can be used with an aim of improving individual's psychological health, building community in the local region and building bridges between different social groups and ages.

The participants also completed several creative exercises and wrote down stories about some episodes from their lives.

As a result of the meeting the participants received a better understanding of the concept of digital storytelling, its stages and functions, possible outcomes and directions of usage of this tool for the improvement of citizen's awareness and well-being.
