It's official: The world has its next top diplomat. Just hours ago, the United Nations General Assembly voted to confirm António Guterres as the ninth UN Secretary-General. He will take office on January 1, 2017.
After the UN Security Council nominated Mr. Guterres last week, you may have heard that he spent a decade leading the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), or that he's the first former Prime Minister to be chosen for the role of Secretary-General. The position of UN Secretary-General is one of the world's toughest jobs, and Mr. Guterres has proven that he is well-equipped to lead.

The Ninth UN Secretary-General
Mr. Guterres will become Secretary-General during an era of complex global challenges when strong UN leadership is vital to peace and progress. Interconnected issues – including swelling refugee populations, violent extremism, and persistent inequality – defy borders and demand effective collaboration. Historic 2015 agreements on climate change and sustainable development are poised to transform our world.
Mr. Guterres, a visionary leader who knows how to get things done, will help the UN realize these promises.
