3rd Edition of MOVE a Great Success

The DITP successfully hosted the third edition of Multimedia Online Virtual Exhibition (MOVE) 2022, as a hybrid platform to promote digital content businesses, from August 1 to 3.

During the event, more than 200 Thai content creators, animators and post-production firms were matched with international companies, generating a business value of US$13.73 million (496.26 million baht) within five years. Over 50 foreign firms from 19 countries/economies attended, including those from Japan, China, the US, South Korea and Hong Kong.

MOVE 2022 also allowed young Thai entrepreneurs to pitch their works for co-production. This will help develop the Thai entertainment industry, which is one of the targeted businesses under the Creative Economy Policy to promote Thailand as a regional hub. The promotion plan is to adopt media ‘soft power’ to promote the export of digital content to the world market.

High Demand for Thai Sauces and Seasonings in the Netherlands

Consumers in the Netherlands are demanding more Thai sauces and seasonings to use in home cooking, according to a DITP news release on July 28. There is also a high demand for other Thai food products, with Sriracha flavoured instant noodles and Thai sweet chilli snacks proving particularly popular.

To effectively pe*****te this market, the DITP has encouraged Thai producers to focus on the quality and standards of both production process and ingredients, while maintaining an authentic Thai flavour, as well as using eco-friendly packaging which meets European Union regulations.

In 2021, Thailand exported US$56.39 million worth of sauces and seasonings to the Netherlands, a 26.8% increase on the previous year. Thai sauces and seasonings are imported by Asian food importers in the Netherlands. Products are also available at major supermarkets in the country including Albert Heijn, Jumbo, Plus, Aldi and Lidl.

Thailand-Busan Sign Mini-FTA

The DITP and the Busan Economic Promotion Agency (BEPA) of South Korea signed an MoU to form a trade partnership through a mini-free trade agreement (mini-FTA) at W Hotel in Bangkok on July 12.

Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister, Jurin Laksanawisit said the MoU will accelerate the economic partnership between Thailand and South Korea as Busan is the second largest city in South Korea, and a hub of logistics and transportation.
In 2021, bilateral trade between Thailand and Busan was valued at US$2.33 billion (75 billion baht). Thailand expects this partnership will boost Thailand’s exports into South Korea to reach US$5.4 billion (200 billion baht) by 2024.

Promoting Thai Premium Rice in Canada

🍚Canada is a vital market for Thai premium-grade rice.

😍Thai Trade Center promoting Thai rice through “Think Rice, Think Thailand” campaign.

👍Thai business should focus on ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) principles.

As the fourth largest importer of Thai Hom Mali rice, Canada is an important market for Thai rice exports.

According to Wiwan Srirubsukha, Consul Commercial and Director of the Thai Trade Center Toronto, Canada imports more than 400,000 tonnes of rice each year, of which 20% is from Thailand, following the US (51%). More than 75% of Thai rice exported to Canada is either Hom Mali or premium rice.

“Rice is a main dish not only for Thais living in Canada but also for more than five million Asian Canadians which account for more than 15% of the total population of 38 million. Many of these are Chinese Canadians who favour Thai Hom Mali rice,” says Srirubsukha.

Thai Companies Ink Deals with Saudi Buyers

The DITP hosted a business matching activity for Thai and Saudi companies in Bangkok on July 6.
The event resulted in 352 business matches generating an estimated US$317 million (11.63 billion baht). The most sought-after products and services were food and beverages, construction materials, healthcare products, retail, transportation, and gems and jewellery.

Saudi buyers said that Thai products are of high quality, meet international standards, and they believe these products will meet the need of Saudi consumers.

The DITP and leading Saudi supermarket chains Manuel and LULU will co-organise promotional events for Thai products such as rice, halal food and fruit in Saudi Arabia as well as launching an online campaign through Instagram and Facebook to create consumer awareness of Thai products.

Saudi Arabia is Thailand’s 17th largest trade partner. Key Thai export products are automobiles and auto parts, wood and wooden products, rubber products, canned and processed seafood, and machinery and parts. Saudi Arabia’s key exports to Thailand are crude oil, chemicals, fertilisers, pesticides, finished oil and scrap metal.

Soft Power and BCG Present Opportunities for Thai Exports to South Korea

👉Thailand could utilise its soft power from TV and films to pe*****te Korean market.

👍Korean consumers value BCG (Bio-Circular-Green) products and green packaging.

🤩The Thai Trade Center has promoted exports through a series of activities.

Thailand’s soft power, such as its TV series and films, could assist exporters to reach the South Korean market, says Chananya Punnarugsa, Minister Counsellor (Commercial) and Director of Thai Trade Center, Seoul, South Korea.

“The use of soft power, such as Thai series and films, is a great tool to promote Thai products and services, including food and goods, as well as culture,” Punnarugsa says.

Punnarugsa believes that changing Korean consumer demand could present opportunities for Thai companies focused on healthy foods, ready-to-eat meal kits, organic and plant-based meat, high protein or high nutritious food, and food with supplements and vitamins. This is due to high proportion of the elderly in the South Korean population, higher number of vegans in South Korea, and increased awareness of health concerns after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Canada Offers Great Potential for Thailand’s BCG Model

🎯Canadian consumers have strong focus on circular economy and sustainability.

🎯Most consumers are willing to pay more for green packaging.

🎯 Thai Trade Center has promoted Thai food through use of local influencers.

Climate change has affected the world in many ways including changing people’s mindsets and behaviour in many countries, such as Canada, which represents a great potential market for Thailand.

Chayada Sirinukul, Consul Commercial and Director of the Thai Trade Center Vancouver, says Canadian consumers have shifted their behaviour significantly towards the circular economy and sustainability, something which Thai exporters should keep in mind when trading with Canada.

Increasingly consumers are switching from regular packaging to reusable or recycled packages. Supermarkets and restaurants have turned towards green products due to consumer demands.

magFish: Keeping Your Clothes and the Waterways Clean

👍magFish is a handmade organic laundry detergent designed in 12 species of fish.

😍It helps keep washing up water free from chemicals.

👉The company has both domestic and international customers mostly from their online channels.

Eco-friendly magFish is a new organic product with a mission to save the waterways by swimming in washing machines to help remove stains on the clothes and keep water free from chemicals.

Warisa Donavanik is the co-founder of magFish, a handmade laundry detergent which can be used as a substitute for detergent and fabric softener. The capsules consist of 99.95% pure magnesium, combined with natural fibres designed in 12 species of fish, which can be used up to 365 days.

“Using magnesium for laundry is not new among Japanese. But in Thailand, it's rather new and difficult to access, so magFish adds value by creating a two-in-one function that makes home laundry both clean and helping society,” says Donavanik.

According to her, magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in seawater, and works as an alkali. It can remove dirt from clothes using a washing machine’s centrifugal force, or even by hand wash.
