The Beginning of Thai Betta Fish

Over 100 years ago in the 1840s, King Rama IV decided to give his Thai Betta fish to one of his friend. Later, the Betta fish ended up with Dr. Theodor Canter, who is a doctor working for The Bengal Medical Service in India.

Nine years later, Dr. Canter published a document about Thai betta fish, or also known as scientifically as the Macropodus pugnax. However, a scientist named Mr. Tate C Regan was already using that name for a different breed of fish. Later, Dr. Canter changed the scientific name to B. splenderns, more commonly known as the Siamese Fighting Fish or Betta. The name “Betta” means beautiful.
