🇬🇧 A Swedish colleague went out for coconut ice cream near BTS Nana. Twenty baht. Several hundred Thai readers replied, not one of them to say he had got it wrong, all of them to explain how to do it properly: wait for the roaming cart, follow by motorbike rather than running, considerably more peanut. One settled the matter with a definition, that if you can run and buy in time, you are Thai. This Consulate has read a great deal of diplomatic correspondence. It rarely covers cart-pursuit tactics.

Plusieurs centaines de Thaïlandais lui ont répondu, non pour le corriger, mais pour lui expliquer comment faire mieux : attendre le chariot ambulant, le suivre à moto plutôt qu'en courant, et beaucoup plus de cacahuètes. L'un d'eux a tranché : si vous courez assez vite pour acheter à temps, vous êtes thaïlandais. Ce Consulat a lu beaucoup de correspondance diplomatique. 🇬🇧 21 July, Belgian National Day.

In Bangkok, the day has a bridge to it. The Thai-Belgian Bridge was inaugurated in 1988 to mark 130 years of diplomatic relations between the two kingdoms: Belgian steel, Thai assembly, set down at the Witthayu and Rama IV crossroads. It became Bangkok's first modern flyover and the model for every overpass that followed.

That steel had a first life. The same structure once stood in Brussels, on the boulevard du Jardin botanique, where the Consul walked past it as a child. He now walks under it here, some 9,000 kilometres further east. Few of us get to keep the same bridge twice.

A very happy National Day to all Belgians in Thailand and abroad. 🇧🇪

À Bangkok, la journée a son pont. Le pont thaï-belge a été inauguré en 1988 pour les 130 ans de relations diplomatiques entre les deux royaumes : acier belge, montage thaïlandais, posé au carrefour de Witthayu et de Rama IV. Ce fut le premier saut-de-mouton moderne de la capitale, et le modèle de tous ceux qui ont suivi.

Cet acier a eu une première vie. La même structure se dressait autrefois à Bruxelles, boulevard du Jardin botanique, où le Consul passait devant elle enfant. Il passe aujourd'hui dessous, quelque 9 000 kilomètres plus à l'est. Il est rare de retrouver deux fois le même pont.

Très bonne fête nationale à tous les Belges de Thaïlande et d'ailleurs. 🇧🇪
