What gives meaning to an image? And how can editing transform individual shots into a story?

🎞️ On September 2, the Thai Film Archive hosted the Masterclass on Documentary Editing: The Logics of Storytelling, part of the Direct Cinema | Second Ateliers Varan in Bangkok 2026 project.

🎥 Led by documentary editing experts Emmanuelle Baude and Luc Forveille, the masterclass explored editing as a fundamental process in the creation of meaning and storytelling. Through their experience in both documentary and narrative filmmaking, the two editors reflected on the choices behind selecting, sequencing, and assembling images, and on the logic that guides every editorial decision.

Because there is no single rule for editing a documentary, but every choice can open up a different way of seeing, understanding, and telling a story.

📌 The event was part of Through the Lens of Direct Cinema, an advanced documentary filmmaking workshop organised by thaifilmfoundation in collaboration with Ateliers Varan | Formations au cinéma documentaire, with the support of the Ministère de l’Europe et des Affaires étrangères, สถานเอกอัครราชทูตฝรั่งเศสประจำประเทศไทย, Italian Cultural Institute | Bangkok and หอภาพยนตร์ Thai Film Archive.

The Milo Award: Bangkok Edition 2026 su Corriere della Sera!

Organizzato in occasione della XXVI Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo, il Premio Milo diventa internazionale e arriva a Bangkok a ottobre 2026.

Nato in Italia dalla collaborazione tra la scrittrice Costanza Rizzacasa d’Orsogna, ENPA - Ente Nazionale Protezione Animali Odv e il Corriere Animali del Corriere della Sera, con il co-sponsoring istituzionale di Roma Capitale, il Premio Milo celebra diversità, inclusività ed empatia in ricordo di Milo, il gattino con disabilità neurologica protagonista della celebre trilogia scritta da Costanza Rizzacasa d’Orsogna e pubblicata da Guanda Editore.

I primi due volumi della saga, Storia di Milo, il gatto che non sapeva saltare e Storia di Milo, il gatto che andò al Polo Sud, sono stati tradotti in thailandese da อ่านอิตาลี.

The MILO Award coinvolgerà bambini italiani, thailandesi e internazionali in un percorso dedicato all’empatia, alla resilienza e alla valorizzazione della diversità in un workshop a cura di BimBi.Italiani.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗼 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱: 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗸𝗼𝗸 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 🇮🇹🇹🇭

The Milo Award makes its international debut in Bangkok bringing together Italian, Thai, and international children through a creative educational journey centred on empathy, resilience, inclusion, and the value of diversity.

🐈‍⬛The project was inspired by Milo, the cat with a neurological disability at the heart of Italian author Costanza Rizzacasa d’Orsogna’s acclaimed children’s trilogy.

🐾 Through stories of real dogs and cats with disabilities supported by Soi Dog Foundation, children will be invited to look at vulnerability from a different perspective, transforming physical challenges into unique “superpowers” through illustrated posters.

🐈 The artworks created during the workshop will be presented in a public exhibition, with the participation of Italian author Costanza Rizzacasa d’Orsogna, celebrating the creativity and commitment of the young participants.

The Milo Award: Bangkok Edition 2026 is organised on the occasion of the XXVI Week of the Italian Language in the World, under the patronage of the Italian Cultural Institute in Bangkok, in collaboration with BimBi.Italiani, Bangkok Community Help Foundation, Neilson Hays Library, and Soi Dog Foundation.

The Italian Cultural Institute in Bangkok is pleased to support the documentary workshop developed by Thai Film Archive and Thai Film Foundation in collaboration with Ateliers Varan.

🎥 A 10-week program bringing together young filmmakers to explore new forms of storytelling and develop their own directorial voice, with a focus on the social, urban, and cultural transformations of Bangkok.

Under the guidance of Italian director Daniele Incalcaterra, participants work through the tradition of Direct Cinema, using the camera above all as a tool for observation and listening.

📌 The completed works will be presented in a final showcase scheduled for the end of September.

A project that puts young voices, documentary cinema, and cultural exchange at the centre, creating new opportunities for dialogue between Thailand and Italy. 🇹🇭 🇮🇹

𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗘𝗫𝗖𝗘𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗗𝗦 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲

A few days ago, we had the pleasure of taking part in the Creative Excellence Awards 2026, held on August 14 at NEX Hall, Siam Paragon.

Organized by the Creative Economy Agency for the 4th consecutive year, the awards celebrate individuals and organisations that use creativity to generate economic value, improve quality of life and contribute to the development of cities, businesses and society.

The ceremony honoured 16 outstanding creative works and brought together international experts and leading Thai creators to exchange ideas, knowledge and visions for the future of the creative economy.

On this occasion, Italy was represented by Perla Gianni Falvo, designer, researcher and Executive Board Member of the ADI – Association for Industrial Design, who delivered the International Keynote Session “Design as the Pillar of Made in Italy Global Prestige”.

Her talk explored the strategic role of Italian design in shaping the international recognition of Made in Italy, highlighting the values that continue to define its global success: culture, research, innovation and aesthetic excellence.

A meaningful opportunity to celebrate creativity as a force capable of connecting cultures, driving innovation and imagining new possibilities for society.

Congratulations to all the winners and to the creative works recognised with these prestigious awards.

𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 🇮🇹🇹🇭

In January 2026, the Italian Cultural Institute Bangkok had the honor of welcoming Dacia Maraini to Bangkok for a series of events.

Throughout her visit, Maraini shared her literary journey and reflected on themes that have shaped her work for decades, including memory, identity, women’s rights, and the power of storytelling.

Among the highlights of her program, she became the first Italian author to participate as keynote speaker at the Southeast Asian Writers Award Ceremony, and took part in the conversation Creative Writing: From Italian Literature to Contemporary Thai Literature with Veeraporn Nitiprapha at the Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University.

During her stay, she also met members of the Thai media at a press event hosted by the Jim Thompson House Museum.

These encounters reflect one of the Institute’s core missions: to create connections. By bringing together authors, universities, cultural institutions, the media, and audiences, we aim to build lasting bridges between Italy and Thailand, fostering dialogue through literature and cultural exchange.

𝗖𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 ☕🌱

Can coffee be heard before it is tasted?

Last June marked the beginning of a new artistic project commissioned by the Italian Cultural Institute Bangkok as part of “Italia Reloaded. Tradition, Aesthetics and Innovation between Taste and Memory”.

The Institute entrusted the creation of this immersive soundscape to Riccardo Mazza and Laura Pol of Project-TO, whose work explores the intersection of art, sound, and interactive systems.

The first recording session took place at Morettino in Palermo, home to Italy’s only experimental coffee plantation. Here, researchers are exploring the future of coffee cultivation in the Mediterranean as climate change reshapes agricultural landscapes.

From the roots and sap of coffee plants to grinders, roasters, and the ambient sounds of the plantation and the Orto Botanico di Palermo, every sound has been carefully collected to compose a new way of listening to coffee.

Supported by Morettino Lab, this is only the beginning of a project that will unfold over the coming months.

Stay tuned as we continue to share the story behind this unique encounter between coffee, sound, nature, and Italian creativity.
