(World Lake Day)
(World Lake Day)
High-level Experts and Leaders Panel on Water and Disasters (HELP) ในการประชุม UN 2023 Water Conference ก่อนที่สมัชชาใหญ่แห่งสหประชาชาติจะรับรองมติ โดยไม่มีการลงคะแนนเสียง เมื่อวันที่ 12 ธันวาคม 2024 และกำหนดให้วันที่ 27 สิงหาคม เป็นวันทะเลสาบโลก เพื่อเป็นเกียรติแก่ World Lake Environment Conference ครั้งแรก (LECS ’84) ซึ่งจัดขึ้นที่จังหวัดชิงะ ประเทศญี่ปุ่น ระหว่างวันที่ 27-31 สิงหาคม 1984
27 August | World Lake Day
Waters that connect life... from local importance to global cooperation. 🏞️
Lakes are more than bodies of water. They are vital ecosystems that support biodiversity, livelihoods, and communities around the world. Protecting lakes therefore means protecting both the water and the lives that depend on these ecosystems.
📜 From the Ramsar Convention to Songkhla Lake:
At the international level, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands provides an important framework for the conservation and wise use of wetlands. Thailand is a contracting party to the Convention and has designated several wetlands as Wetlands of International Importance.
One important wetland connected to the Songkhla Lake system is Kuan Ki Sian of the Thale Noi Non-Hunting Area in Phatthalung Province, which was designated as Thailand’s first Ramsar Site (Ramsar Site No. 948) in 1998. The site includes lakes, marshes, peat swamps, and agricultural areas, and is important to the livelihoods of surrounding communities.
Meanwhile, Songkhla Lake is a unique natural brackish-water coastal lagoon and the only one of its kind in Thailand. Its interconnected freshwater, brackish, and saltwater environments support diverse ecosystems and natural resources that sustain local communities.
🗓️ The idea of establishing World Lake Day:
The idea of establishing World Lake Day was proposed by Dr. Han Seung-soo, Chair of the High-level Experts and Leaders Panel on Water and Disasters (HELP), at the 2023 UN Water Conference. The UN General Assembly subsequently adopted the resolution without a vote on 12 December 2024, designating 27 August as World Lake Day in honor of the first World Lake Environment Conference (LECS ’84), held in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, from 27–31 August 1984.
🌿 Fun Fact: what is that green layer on the water?
The green layer seen on the surface of a water body may be caused by dense accumulations of algae or aquatic plants. It does not necessarily indicate pollution. However, when algae grow excessively—often due to an excess of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus—the resulting algal blooms can disrupt aquatic ecosystems.
Dense algal growth can block sunlight from reaching underwater plants, while the decomposition of dead algae can consume dissolved oxygen in the water, potentially creating conditions that are harmful to fish and other aquatic life.
🌊🐳 When a Lake Becomes a Lifeline:
Songkhla Lake provides critical habitat for the Irrawaddy dolphin, a rare and endangered aquatic species, while also supporting traditional fisheries and local livelihoods.
Protecting ecosystems like these is therefore a shared responsibility—from local communities to international cooperation. It directly supports SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) through the protection and restoration of water-related ecosystems, while also contributing to SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 15 (Life on Land) through the conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity.
Let’s protect our water resources, reduce pollution, keep waste out of waterways, and support sustainable water management. Because protecting a lake means protecting not only its waters, but also the people, wildlife, and ecosystems connected to it. 🌏💧
