In Asia Pacific, the UN Environment Programme operates through its Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific and works in 41 countries in the region. We work with governments, local authorities, civil society, other UN entities, regional and international institutions, as well as the private sector to develop and implement cleaner and safer policies and strategies that catalyze efficient use of the

region’s natural assets and reduces degradation of the environment and risks to both humans and the environment.

Air pollution and climate change are deeply interlinked — many of the actions that cut air pollution also slow climate change. On 7 September, this regional event brings together governments, technical experts, and civil society in Bangkok under the theme "Clean Air for Climate Action."

What to expect:

Six years ago, 27 law students looked at rising seas swallowing their neighbours' homes and decided to fight back — in court. 🌊⚖️

Cynthia Houniuhi, Vishal Prasad and their fellow members of Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change spent five years building a case that ended up at the world's highest court, the International Court of Justice. In July 2025, the judges ruled: states have a legal obligation to protect the climate system from greenhouse gas emissions.

It's a landmark moment for climate justice — and proof that young people from the world's most vulnerable nations can take on the world's biggest polluters and win. PISFCC has since been honoured with the UN Environment Programme's Champions of the Earth 2025 Award. 🏆

The latest science shows that the planet will keep getting hotter. An alternative exists: an “Overshoot, peak and decline” pathway. Every fraction of a degree avoided and every year by which overshoot is shortened will save lives, protect ecosystems and reduce economic losses.

Bringing global temperatures back below 1.5°C requires countries to act fast to cut carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases.

🌊 Did you know the ocean produces half the oxygen we breathe? It also absorbs 30% of all CO2 emissions and soaks up 90% of the extra heat trapped by those emissions.

That makes it the planet's largest carbon sink — and one of our strongest allies in the fight against climate change. Mangroves and seagrasses along our coasts capture carbon up to 4x faster than forests on land, while coral reefs — covering less than 0.1% of the ocean — support a quarter of all marine life.

Protecting the ocean isn't optional. It's central to keeping our climate stable. 💙

That imbalance is fueling climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution — but the UN Environment Programme's new State of Finance for Nature 2026 report shows it can be reversed.

Few garments are as universal as a pair of jeans 👖

Behind their humble look is an intricate global value chain — natural resource extraction, manufacturing, transport, design and marketing, all bundled into one product.

A single pair can require 3,800 litres of water to produce. While much of the world's denim is made in Asia, factories in Tunisia are now testing ways to shrink that footprint — recycling wastewater, phasing out harsh chemicals, and using ozone instead of water to fade fabric.

🌱 Restoring degraded land isn't just an environmental goal — it's proving to be a viable model for building resilience and livelihoods at scale.

At the Gala of Hope: Land Edition, held during , three initiatives were named the United Nations World Restoration Flagships - an initiative led by the UN Environment Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO):

🇧🇷 Restoring Brazil's Cerrado Savannah, one of the world's most biodiverse and threatened landscapes.

🌏 Integrated Resilience in the Sahel, led with the World Food Programme, strengthening food security and land health together.

🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia's National Greening Program, delivered with Saudi Green Initiative, part of one of the largest afforestation efforts globally.

These initiatives show what's possible when restoration is approached as long-term infrastructure for people and ecosystems, not a one-off project.
