Courtesy Visit with Thai Airways CEO

The Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to the Kingdom of Thailand, H.E Darkey Africa, accompanied by Ms Boipelo Motsi-Counsellor: Political, held a productive meeting with the Chief Executive Officer of Thai Airways International, Mr. Chai Eamsiri on 11 August 2026 and his Executives. The purpose of the meeting was to explore the possibility of connectivity between Bangkok and Johannesburg. Whilst the discussions were very positive, issues of route profitability and viability were raised. There was consensus that further engagements with the relevant persons at South African Airways will be imperative to discuss the technical and economic implications of the possible commencement of the route between the two countries.
Discussions also reflected on how connectivity between South Africa and Thailand could help to enhance tourism, trade, and people-to-people exchanges, further fostering closer cooperation between the two countries.
To ensure discussions between SAA and Thai Airways, Ambassador Africa was requested to facilitate possible engagement between the CEOs of the two airlines, on the prospects for collaboration, mindful of the global economic environment affecting the aviation industry. The two airlines will determine the economic viability of the proposal after extensive discussions, given developments in the Middle East and other related considerations. Both sides expressed their shared interest in promoting future cooperation between South African Airways and Thai Airways.

South Africa and Thailand Advance Agricultural Cooperation and Market Access
H.E. Mr. Darkey Africa, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to the Kingdom of Thailand, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Suriya Jungrungreangkit, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand on 11 August 2026, to discuss ways to further advance bilateral agricultural cooperation, trade and market access.

The meeting reaffirmed the longstanding and positive relationship between South Africa and Thailand, with both sides recognising the considerable potential to expand agricultural trade for mutual benefit. Discussions focused on advancing market access and addressing outstanding regulatory and technical matters. South Africa highlighted its market access interests in berries, pears and cereals, while discussions also covered ongoing technical considerations relating to South African beef. Thailand, for its part, highlighted its market access interests in longan, mangosteen and processed beef.

The discussions also underscored the important role of the Joint Agricultural Working Group (JAWG) as a bilateral mechanism for advancing technical cooperation and addressing market access matters. Both sides welcomed the forthcoming visit of a South African agricultural delegation to Thailand from 31 August to 1 September 2026, which will provide a further opportunity to advance technical discussions with the relevant Thai authorities.

Ambassador Africa reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to continued engagements and close coordination with Thailand, including follow-up with the relevant South African authorities on matters raised during the meeting. Both sides expressed their shared interest in translating ongoing cooperation into practical and mutually beneficial outcomes, further strengthening agricultural trade and the broader partnership between South Africa and Thailand.

The Embassy of the Republic of South Africa in Thailand, proudly joins South Africans in commemorating the 70th anniversary of the historic 1956 Women’s March—a defining moment in the country’s journey towards equality, justice and democracy.

Seventy years ago, more than 20,000 courageous women marched to the Union Buildings, united in their demand for dignity, freedom and equal rights. Their legacy continues to inspire generations and reminds us that empowered women are essential to building stronger, more prosperous and inclusive societies.

This year’s theme, “Empowered Women Empower Nations,” reaffirms the vital role of women in leadership, entrepreneurship, innovation, governance and sustainable development. When women have equal opportunities to participate and succeed, communities flourish, economies grow and nations become more resilient.

The Embassy remains committed to strengthening partnerships between South Africa and Thailand that promote gender equality, support women-led businesses, and expand opportunities for women across all sectors.

Today, we honour the pioneers of 1956 and celebrate every woman whose leadership, determination and vision continue to shape a better future.

Nelson Mandela International Day 2026 at Central Women’s Correctional Institution on 18 July, focusing on the Mandela Rules and the Bangkok Rules

On 18 July 2026, the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa in Thailand, the Nelson Mandela Center for Conflict Resolution, Atrocity Prevention, and Human Security at Chulalongkorn University, and Thailand’s Department of Corrections, the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC),the Thailand Institute of Justice with Ambassadors from Morocco, Egypt and Kenya, and representatives from Russia, the Peoples’ Republic of China, India and other invited guests, commemorated Nelson Mandela International Day at the Central Women’s Correctional Institution.

Holding Mandela Day at a correctional institution gave the commemoration particular significance. It placed Mandela’s legacy within a setting where the principles of dignity, humane treatment, rehabilitation, and the possibility of a second chance must be translated into everyday practice. Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison yet transformed that experience into a global legacy of reconciliation, justice, and peaceful change. In 2015, the revised United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners were named the “Nelson Mandela Rules” in recognition of his legacy and his lifelong commitment to human dignity.

During the event, H.E. Mr Darkey Ephraim Africa, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to the Kingdom of Thailand, reflected on the historical connection between Mandela’s life and the standards that now bear his name, as well as South Africa’s continuing role in promoting these principles internationally. Within a women’s correctional setting, the Mandela Rules are complemented by the Bangkok Rules, which addresses the specific needs and circumstances of women in prison and promote appropriate non-custodial measures for women offenders. Together, the two frameworks demonstrate how universal human dignity and gender-responsive justice can reinforce one another.

The Nelson Mandela Center, established through cooperation between the South African Embassy and Chulalongkorn University, provides an important bridge between Mandela’s legacy and practical engagement in Thailand. Through research, dialogue, and partnership, the Center advances work in conflict resolution, atrocity prevention, human rights, and human security in Thailand and the wider region.

The event brought together representatives from the Department of Corrections, Chulalongkorn University, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Thailand Institute of Justice, the diplomatic corps, and international partner organisations. The site visit offered participants an opportunity to observe how principles of humane treatment, rehabilitation, and social reintegration are being applied within a correctional environment.

For the South African Embassy, Nelson Mandela International Day is not only an occasion to remember an extraordinary life. It is also an invitation to consider how Mandela’s values can continue to shape institutions, policies, and the treatment of people today. This commemoration reflected a South Africa–Thailand partnership that extends beyond diplomatic protocol—connecting shared values, academic knowledge, international standards, and practical action in support of a more just and humane society.
