🤝𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘀

Last week, colleagues from the Embassy attended the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the Global Innovation District Alliance in Bangkok.

The collaboration brings together Chulalongkorn University, True Digital Park, Eindhoven International Project Office, Singapore Management University, the University of Strathclyde and Techsauce to strengthen international cooperation and knowledge exchange in support of Thailand’s innovation ecosystem and the development of next-generation innovation districts.

The initiative focuses on learning from international experience and applying those insights in the Thai context, including in areas such as future food, health and the environment. Representing the Netherlands, Pam Portheine from Eindhoven International Project Office signed the MOU alongside partners from Thailand, Singapore and the United Kingdom. Vice Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Danuphorn Punnakanta also attended the signing ceremony.

This signing reflects Dutch knowledge and experience contributing to international cooperation in global innovation. We look forward to seeing how this cooperation develops and contributes to Thailand’s innovation ecosystem.

Vorige week waren collega’s van de ambassade aanwezig bij de ondertekening van een Memorandum of Understanding voor de Global Innovation District Alliance in Bangkok.

De samenwerking brengt Chulalongkorn University, True Digital Park, Eindhoven International Project Office, Singapore Management University, de University of Strathclyde en Techsauce samen om kennis en ervaring uit te wisselen en bij te dragen aan de verdere ontwikkeling van het Thaise innovatie-ecosysteem en nieuwe innovatiegebieden.

Het initiatief kijkt naar internationale voorbeelden en hoe die kunnen worden toegepast in de Thaise context, onder meer op het gebied van voeding, gezondheid en milieu. Namens Nederland ondertekende Pam Portheine van Eindhoven International Project Office het MOU, samen met partners uit Thailand, Singapore en het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Ook vice-minister van Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Danuphorn Punnakanta was aanwezig bij de ondertekeningsceremonie.

Deze ondertekening laat zien dat Nederlandse kennis en ervaring bijdragen aan internationale samenwerking op het gebied van wereldwijde innovatie. We kijken ernaar uit om te zien hoe de samenwerking zich verder ontwikkelt en bijdraagt aan het innovatie-ecosysteem in Thailand.

🌳𝗢𝗻𝘇𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝘁 𝗦𝗵𝗺𝗮 𝘃𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗳𝗯𝗮𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗸𝗼𝗸 🏙️

Op 27 augustus waren collega’s van het economische team van de ambassade aanwezig bij het 19-jarig jubileum van Shma, “19 Years of Participating in the Future”. Op het programma stond een gesprek over hoe we samen aan een betere toekomst kunnen werken, de lancering van Shma Monograph No. 291 en een bijzondere lichtshow.

De ambassade werkt vooral samen met Shma Company Limited via We Park, een non-profitplatform dat is opgericht door een van de medeoprichters van Shma. Samen hebben we verschillende initiatieven ondersteund die Bangkok groener en leefbaarder maken. Zo werd ongebruikte ruimte onder een snelweg omgevormd tot openbare ruimte. Ook werkten we tijdens Bangkok Design Week aan verschillende activiteiten rond groene stadsontwikkeling, openbare ruimte en stedelijke weerbaarheid. De samenwerking komt voort uit een gedeelde interesse in het creëren van betere stedelijke ruimtes, met aandacht voor participatie, ontwerp en de lange termijn.

Van harte gefeliciteerd aan Shma met hun jubileum. We kijken ernaar uit om onze samenwerking de komende jaren voort te zetten en samen ruimte om te vormen tot betekenisvolle plekken, met aandacht voor mens, planeet en participatie.

The Embassy’s Economic Affairs team joined Shma for its 19th anniversary event, “19 Years of Participating in the Future” on 27 August. The programme included a vision talk on creating a better future, the launch of Shma Monograph No. 291 and an immersive light show.

The Embassy has worked with Shma Company Limited mainly through We Park, a non-profit platform established by a co-founder of Shma. Together, we have supported several initiatives aimed at making Bangkok greener and more liveable. These include the transformation of underused space beneath an expressway into public space, as well as activities during Bangkok Design Week focused on green urban development, public space and urban resilience. This cooperation reflects a shared interest in creating better urban spaces through participation, design and long-term thinking.

Congratulations to Shma on 19 years of work and we look forward to continuing our cooperation in the years ahead by transforming space into place, connecting planet and people through a participatory process.

The Office of Industrial Economics (OIE), Ministry of Industry of Thailand, is inviting applications for the International Workshop on Thai-Eu Industrial Cooperation on Critical Raw Material Supply Chains for the Clean Energy Transition, taking place in Bangkok from 20-25 September 2026.

The workshop brings together participants from government, business, industry and academia to exchange knowledge and explore opportunities for stronger Thai-EU cooperation. Selected participants will receive logistical support, including airfare, accommodation and meals.

Yesterday, the Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Joost van Ettro and Deputy Head of Political and Economic Affairs Hannah Pannwitz welcomed representatives from UNFPA Thailand to discuss UNFPA’s strategic vision and opportunities for further cooperation. We are proud of our ongoing partnership on the “A Safe Journey with Her” cycling event in Bangkok, promoting women’s safety.

It was a valuable exchange on shared priorities and future collaboration. We look forward to continuing our cooperation with UNFPA Thailand and working together to advance sexual and reproductive health and gender equality in the region.

Gisteren ontvingen Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Joost van Ettro en plaatsvervangend hoofd Politieke en Economische Zaken Hannah Pannwitz vertegenwoordigers van UNFPA Thailand op de ambassade. Zij spraken onder meer over de strategische visie van UNFPA en mogelijkheden voor verdere samenwerking. We zijn trots op de lopende samenwerking rond het fietsevent “A Safe Journey with Her” in Bangkok, gericht op de veiligheid van vrouwen en meisjes.

Het was een waardevolle uitwisseling over gezamenlijke prioriteiten en toekomstige samenwerking. We kijken ernaar uit om onze samenwerking met UNFPA Thailand voort te zetten en samen te werken aan seksuele en reproductieve gezondheid en rechten en gendergelijkheid in de regio.

UNFPA Thailand and the Embassy of the Netherlands Partner to Advance Strategic Cooperation

On 19 August 2026, UNFPA Thailand, led by Ms. Siriluck Chiengwong, Head of Office, along with UNFPA Thailand team, met with Mr. Joost van Ettro, Chargé d' Affaires a.i., at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Thailand.

The insightful discussion covered UNFPA’s strategic vision, the 13th Country Programme Document (CPD13) 2027–2031, and opportunities to further strengthen the partnership. Additionally, the team discussed preparations for the upcoming UNFPA Global Leadership Meeting, which will be hosted in Bangkok this October.

UNFPA Thailand would like to thank the Embassy for the warm welcome and remains committed to continuing this strong partnership to advance sustainable development together.

🤝 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗸𝗼𝗸

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands is proud to be part of Friends of Bangkok, a new network launched by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to bring together international partners and strengthen cooperation for a more liveable and prosperous city.

The Netherlands and Bangkok have worked closely together to make Bangkok a more liveable place, for instance through the promotion of cycling and improving the waterways. Governor Chadchart’s visit to the Netherlands earlier this year was one example of this partnership.

Through Friends of Bangkok, embassies, international organisations, businesses and other partners can exchange ideas, strengthen existing partnerships and explore new opportunities for the city. We look forward to building on our strong cooperation with BMA and contributing Dutch knowledge and experience to Bangkok’s future.

Thank you to Governor Chadchart Sittipunt and BMA for bringing Bangkok’s international partners together and creating a platform for further cooperation.

De Nederlandse ambassade is trots om deel uit te maken van Friends of Bangkok, een nieuw netwerk van de Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) dat internationale partners samenbrengt om de samenwerking voor een leefbare en welvarende stad te versterken.

It is our pleasure to welcome Joost van Uum as the new agricultural counsellor for Thailand and Vietnam. Joost has over 25 years of experience and has worked as an agricultural counsellor for Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. He will be bringing this knowledge and expertise to support agricultural trade and strengthen ties between the Netherlands and the region.

Đại sứ quán Hà Lan tại Hà Nội vui mừng giới thiệu đồng nghiệp mới của chúng tôi, anh Joost van Uum, Tham tán Nông nghiệp phụ trách Việt Nam và Thái Lan.

Anh Joost là người có nhiều “duyên nợ” với Việt Nam và khu vực Đông Nam Á. Trước khi hoàn thành nhiệm kỳ gần 6 năm với vị trí Tham tán Nông nghiệp phụ trách Indonesia, Malaysia và Singapore, anh đã có nhiều năm gắn bó với Việt Nam thông qua các dự án hợp tác quốc tế về Nước & Khí hậu tại Cơ quan Quản lý Không gian Hà Lan (NSO). Với hơn 25 năm kinh nghiệm phong phú, nhiệm kỳ tại Hà Nội lần này giống như một hành trình "trở về" để anh tiếp tục kết nối Hà Lan đồng hành sâu sắc hơn với lĩnh vực nông nghiệp trong khu vực.

Joost chia sẻ: “Hà Nội đã chào đón tôi bằng sự 'ấm áp' của cả thời tiết lẫn con người nơi đây! Việt Nam, Thái Lan và các quốc gia Đông Nam Á luôn là các đối tác lớn của Hà Lan trong lĩnh vực xây dựng hệ thống nông nghiệp – thực phẩm bền vững, tuần hoàn và đổi mới sáng tạo. Tôi đang rất hào hứng được hỗ trợ phát triển thương mại, kết nối các đối tác, tìm kiếm cơ hội hợp tác và cùng nhau, chúng ta cùng hóa giải những vấn đề phức tạp. Tôi mong sớm được làm việc cùng các bạn để cùng 'gieo mầm' thành công cho cả người nông dân và những nhà lãnh đạo tương lai!".

The Embassy team in Hanoi is excited to welcome a brand-new member this week: Mr. Joost van Uum, our new Agricultural Counsellor for both Vietnam and Thailand!

Joost is no stranger to Vietnam and Southeast Asia! Before concluding his successful 6-year term as Agricultural Counsellor for Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, he had spent years working closely with Vietnam through G2G projects on Water & Climate Services at the Netherlands Space Office (NSO). With over 25 years of experience under his belt, moving to Hanoi feels just like coming back home to deepen the countries’ agricultural cooperation.

‘Hanoi welcomes me with the warmth of both the weather and its people! Vietnam and Thailand, along with other Southeast Asian countries are important partners of the Netherlands in advancing sustainable, circular, and innovative agri-food systems. I look forward to supporting agricultural trade, engaging with key partners, exploring collaborative opportunities, strengthening bilateral ties, and making complex problems look easy (or at least manageable). Let’s work together to plant seeds of success for future farmers and leaders,’ shared Joost.

🕊️ 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗞𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗶

Afgelopen zaterdag kwamen we in Kanchanaburi samen om de slachtoffers van de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de Japanse bezetting te herdenken. Dit jaar is het 81 jaar geleden dat de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Azië ten einde kwam.

Tijdens de herdenking op Don Rak Allied War Cemetery stonden we stil bij de duizenden geallieerde krijgsgevangenen en Aziatische dwangarbeiders die onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden moesten werken aan de Thailand-Burma Railway. Op de begraafplaats in Kanchanaburi liggen bijna 7.000 krijgsgevangenen begraven, onder wie ongeveer 2.000 Nederlanders.

Daarna hebben de ambassade en de andere deelnemers kransen gelegd bij de Chedi–Nadukal Memorial bij Wat Thaworn Wararam. Deze herdenkingsplek is gewijd aan de vele Aziatische dwangarbeiders die tijdens de aanleg van de spoorlijn hebben geleden en zijn omgekomen. Het leed en de verhalen van deze Aziatische dwangarbeiders zijn lange tijd onderbelicht gebleven. Voor het eerst maakte deze plek officieel deel uit van het Nederlandse herdenkingsprogramma, een belangrijke erkenning voor de Aziatische slachtoffers en hun nabestaanden.

Leerlingen van Srinagarindra the Princess Mother School droegen met een indrukwekkend gedicht bij aan de ceremonie. Door jonge generaties bij herdenkingen te betrekken, geven we de verhalen van de slachtoffers door en blijven we stilstaan bij het belang van vrijheid en het besef dat die niet vanzelfsprekend is.

We blijven de slachtoffers herdenken en hun nagedachtenis eren.

🕊️ 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗞𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗶

Last Saturday, the Embassy, along with representatives of the Thai authorities and Allied nations, members of the diplomatic corps, and members of the Dutch community, gathered in Kanchanaburi to remember the victims of the Second World War and the Japanese occupation. This year marks 81 years since the end of the Second World War in Asia.

During the commemoration at the Don Rak Allied War Cemetery, we remembered the thousands of Allied prisoners of war and Asian forced labourers who worked under brutal conditions on the Thailand-Burma Railway. Nearly 7,000 prisoners of war are buried at the Don Rak cemetery in Kanchanaburi, including around 2,000 Dutch nationals.

The Embassy and other participants then laid wreaths at the Chedi–Nadukal Memorial at Wat Thaworn Wararam. This memorial is dedicated to the many Asian forced labourers who suffered and lost their lives during the construction of the railway. Their suffering and stories have long been overlooked. For the first time, the site was officially included in the Dutch commemoration programme, an important recognition of the Asian victims and their families.

Students from Srinagarindra the Princess Mother School contributed to the ceremony with a moving poem. By involving younger generations in remembrance we continue to pass on the stories of those who lost their lives and reflect on the value and privilege of freedom today.

We continue to remember the victims and honour their memory.

Today, the Embassy of the Netherlands in Bangkok joins the people of Thailand in remembering the Birthday Anniversary of the late Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother.

Her Majesty’s life was marked by a deep commitment to the wellbeing of the Thai people and by her lasting contribution to the preservation and promotion of Thailand’s arts, traditions and cultural heritage.

On Thursday 6 August, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bangkok marked the beginning of a new chapter with a Buddhist blessing ceremony at our new location in Central Park Offices.

As we embark on this exciting new journey, we remain committed to strengthening the longstanding friendship and partnership between Thailand and the Netherlands through close collaboration across many areas of shared interest.

We look forward to filling this new chapter with meaningful opportunities, lasting partnerships, shared successes, and many happy memories.
