Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, his spouse, and a delegation are scheduled to visit Thailand on 2 September 2026. During his visit, Prime Minister Wong will attend the fifth Leaders’ Retreat and witness the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on social development between Thailand and Singapore.
The visit aims to further advance Thailand-Singapore relations from bilateral cooperation toward a comprehensive partnership covering strategic issues and supporting ASEAN priorities.
The four key areas of cooperation are as follows:
1. Sustainable Green Partnership
The two countries aim to promote cooperation in clean energy, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, carbon credit trading, and regional power connectivity through the ASEAN Power Grid. This will enable ASEAN member states to transmit and trade electricity with one another, enhancing energy security and resilience. Thailand, Lao PDR, Malaysia, and Singapore are already engaged in cross-border electricity trading through the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP), an important step toward the development of the ASEAN Power Grid.
2. Economic Connectivity and Resilience
Both countries seek to expand cooperation in the digital economy, investment, technology, infrastructure, and supply chains, particularly by promoting Singaporean investment in Thailand for future industries. Singapore serves as a regional hub for finance, investment, and technology, while Thailand offers strong potential through its market, manufacturing base, infrastructure, and geographical connectivity with neighboring countries.
3. Defense and Security Cooperation
Thailand and Singapore attach importance to strengthening shared security across the areas of defense, security, and emerging threats. Cooperation is expected to focus particularly on addressing transitional crime, online scams, and cybercrime.
4. Close Regional Cooperation
Singapore will assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2027, followed by Thailand in 2028. The visit provides an opportunity for both countries to ensure continuity in their cooperation and to coordinate on common priorities that can be advanced for the benefit of ASEAN, particularly in areas such as the digital economy, energy security, regional connectivity, and competitiveness.

Thailand Unveils Major Development Push for Its 5 Southern Provinces

Thailand's Cabinet has directed government agencies to fast-track development plans for five southern provinces — Songkhla, Satun, Yala, Narathiwat, and Pattani — following a workshop bringing together local communities and officials from across the region.

The package is substantial: 44 urgent projects worth 1.26 billion baht (about US$38 million), alongside 59 broader policy proposals valued at 62.33 billion baht (roughly US$1.9 billion). Together, they target everything from economic growth and public services to disaster preparedness and security.

🔹 What's actually changing on the ground?

* Better flood control — Drainage upgrades in Hat Yai and disaster-mitigation work in Khuan Lang, part of 67 million baht (about US$2.03 million) in projects being considered for Central Fund support, according to Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek.

* Bigger ports, bigger opportunities — Songkhla and Pattani ports will have their navigation channels dredged to depths of roughly 9–10 meters, allowing larger cargo ships to dock and boosting regional trade.

* Healthcare expansion — The Ministry of Public Health has been instructed to speed up design work for a second hospital in Hat Yai, with a proposed budget of 250 million baht.

* Safer roads — The Ministry of Transport will review 45 highway rehabilitation projects, estimated at 835.8 million baht (about US$25.33 million) to repair infrastructure damaged by disasters since 2025.

* Smoother borders — Streamlined immigration and customs procedures, plus improved loan conditions for local businesses.

Projects that are ready to move forward will be folded into official budget requests, part of a broader push to strengthen infrastructure, public services, and connectivity across Southern Thailand.

Thailand’s Anti-Corruption Agency Inspects Phuket Hotels to Drive Transparent Licensing

The Office of the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission, led by Deputy Secretary-General Pol. Lt. Col. Siripong Sritula, joined local authorities for a field inspection of at least eight hotel establishments in Phuket applying for operating licenses under the Hotel Act 2004. The visit aimed to verify regulatory compliance and streamline the licensing process.

The inspection team reviewed building conditions, operational standards, and legal requirements across the properties to ensure accurate processing and full adherence to the law.

Officials also engaged directly with hotel operators to better understand administrative hurdles and licensing bottlenecks, working alongside relevant provincial agencies to identify practical, efficient solutions.

Based on its findings, the agency issued recommendations to improve procedural transparency, cut unnecessary bureaucratic delays, and prevent the misuse of discretionary power. The measures were aimed at strengthening public trust and supporting economic growth.

By refining the licensing process, Thailand aims to build a more transparent business environment, one that supports the growth and quality of its local hotel industry.

Thai PM Engages With 5 Southern Border Provinces, Sets Solutions Across 4 Dimensions

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul chaired a workshop to gather input on developing Thailand's five southern border provinces — Songkhla, Satun, Yala, Narathiwat, and Pattani — as part of a cabinet meeting held in Songkhla. The session was designed to address local challenges head-on and translate them into concrete, actionable solutions.

Drawing on insights from the community, the workshop identified proposals across four core areas:

● Economy
Promoting tourism, upgrading infrastructure and logistics, advancing urban planning, and boosting investment and border trade.

● Society
Easing public health congestion, preparing for an aging population, supporting mental health, developing workforce skills, improving housing, and tackling student dropout rates.

● Security
Strengthening internal and border security, while reshaping approaches to intelligence, safety, youth engagement, and international cooperation.

● Disaster Management
Improving water and resource management, upgrading early warning systems and databases, and enhancing post-disaster relief and recovery.

Emphasizing the need for close collaboration, the Prime Minister said: "With multiple agencies involved, please coordinate closely, integrate data, exercise thoroughness, and ensure absolute efficiency in every action." All proposals will now be reviewed in an upcoming Cabinet meeting as the government works to drive sustainable development across the southern border provinces.

Thai PM Visits Hat Yai to Tackle Flood Prevention Ahead of Rainy Season

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, along with cabinet members, visited the Na Khuan floodgate in Hat Yai, Songkhla Province, to review ongoing efforts to prevent and manage flooding in the area, one of southern Thailand's most flood-prone cities.

The Royal Irrigation Department briefed the Prime Minister on its progress: dredging over 650,000 cubic meters of accumulated sediment across 7 canals, set to finish before October, alongside urgent repairs to a 600-meter stretch of the R.1 Canal by 23 September. Once complete, the canal will be able to drain excess water at a rate of 1,200 cubic meters per second, critical capacity ahead of peak rainy season.

Looking further ahead, authorities are also proposing 8 new reservoirs to boost long-term water storage capacity by over 16%, adding more than 200 million cubic meters of capacity. Two major projects — Khlong Kaeo and Khlong Wa reservoirs — are already included in the draft 2027 budget plan.

On top of infrastructure upgrades, a new early-warning system is in the works with local municipalities, using monitoring points in Sadao district to alert Hat Yai residents up to 15 hours before floodwaters arrive, giving people crucial time to prepare and protect their homes and livelihoods.

The Premier also met with residents to hear their concerns firsthand and reaffirm the government's commitment to keeping communities safe.

A city that welcomes millions of visitors is also investing in its long-term resilience.

Thailand Drives Songkhla's Economy Through Cultural Tourism

The Tourism Authority of Thailand is advancing its "City Branding" policy to elevate the southern province of Songkhla as a rising travel destination. Already recognized as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy for 2025, Songkhla is now leaning into religious, cultural, and community-based tourism to carve out a fresh identity built around creative travel experiences.

This initiative aligns with positive tourism indicators. Between January and July 2026, Songkhla welcomed more than 4.44 million visitors, generating over 32,227 million baht (approximately US$970.84 million) in revenue. The growth underscores the province's potential as a premier southern destination, one rich in year-round traditions that showcase local food, culture, and ways of life.

To build on this success, the government is rolling out proactive roadshows and promotional campaigns, linking up regional travel routes, and expanding into new tourism niches such as wellness retreats and year-end cultural festivals. Six Filming Locations in Thailand Featured in K-Drama A Shop for Killers Season 2

According to the Thailand Film Office (TFO), many scenes in the Korean drama A Shop for Killers Season 2 were filmed across Thailand, which serves as an important setting in the new season. The series, starring Lee Dong-wook, is now streaming on Disney+.

The South Korean production team traveled to Thailand in November 2025 to film key scenes for the series. Filming took place across five provinces: Bangkok, Samut Prakan, Nakhon Pathom, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Kanchanaburi.

The TFO invites fans to retrace the series’ footsteps and explore the six Thai filming locations portrayed in the drama, listed here:

1. Asok Montri Intersection, Bangkok—A central Bangkok location that vividly captures the atmosphere of Thailand’s bustling capital;

Beyond the Venue: Four Highlights of Thailand’s Preparation for the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group

Thailand will welcome more than 15,000 visitors from nearly 200 countries for the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group, taking place from 12 to 18 October, at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) in Bangkok.

Often described as the “Financial Olympics,” the event brings together central bank governors, finance ministers, senior government officials, economists, and financial experts from around the world. Thailand is one of only three countries—Türkiye and Japan—to have been selected to host the Annual Meetings for a second time. Thailand first hosted in 1991, 35 years ago. Being chosen to host for the 2026 is therefore a remarkable opportunity for Thailand to showcase its capabilities, while allowing Thai people to witness a global financial mega-event taking place on home soil.

Ornicha Sawangfa, international public finance expert at the Fiscal Policy Office under the Ministry of Finance, highlighted four major aspects of Thailand’s preparations, which are being carried out in accordance with the IMF and World Bank Group’s stringent standards.

1. “Everything in one building”
Looking back at the 2023 Annual Meetings in Morocco, the organizers had to build a new city in the middle of the desert to accommodate the large-scale event. Thailand, by contrast, is making a full use of the capabilities of the QSNCC, with all major activities taking place within a single building.

2. Attention to every detail—even “coffee”
The preparations go far beyond physical infrastructure. The organizing team has tested everything from lighting and air-conditioning temperatures to noise levels, ensuring that even the smallest details do not interfere with participants’ concentration.

Even the event’s coffee service has been carefully planned. The IMF places a strong emphasis on speed and efficiency, so conventional fresh coffee machines will not be used because they are considered too slow for the fast-paced environment. Instead, coffee will be brewed in nearly one-meter-tall pots in the kitchen and then transferred into thermos containers, allowing participants to serve themselves quickly and conveniently.

3. Turning “community textiles” into acoustic architecture
Dividing the venue into hundreds of rooms presents a significant acoustic challenge, particularly in terms of echo and sound leakage. The Thai team addressed this issue by incorporating handwoven textiles from communities across the country into acoustic panels. The solution not only improves sound insulation but also transforms spaces into showcases of Thailand’s rich and diverse textile heritage.

4. Selecting interpreters through an extremely demanding test
The meeting will provide interpretation in seven major languages. To ensure the highest standard, the IMF has brought experts directly from Washington, D.C., to conduct additional tests for interpreter selection. Accuracy and language proficiency are not the only requirements. Interpreters must also be able to maintain a steady voice, remain composed under pressure, and perform confidently throughout the sessions.

Hosting the 2026 IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meetings is a major opportunity for Thailand and for all Thais to welcome visitors from around the world, promote the country’s rich cultural heritage, and demonstrate Thailand’s ability to host a world-class event at the highest standards.
