SEAMEO SPAFA is pleased to share that our Centre Director, Dr. Hatthaya Siriphatthanakun, recently participated in the 5th Huangshan Dialogue on UNESCO-designated Sites and Sustainable Development, held in Huangshan City, Anhui Province, China from 31 May to 01 June 2026. 🇨🇳✨

Organized by the International Centre on Space Technologies for Natural and Cultural Heritage (HIST) under the auspices of UNESCO, alongside international partners, the Dialogue gathered global experts, policymakers, and researchers to explore the theme: “Digital Technologies Driving Sustainable Development of UNESCO-designated Sites.” 🌐💻

🎙️ As a featured speaker, Dr. Hatthaya contributed to vital discussions on cultural heritage conservation, highlighting how innovative digital technologies can safeguard heritage, strengthen resilience to climate change, and support sustainable development.

🤝 A Milestone Partnership: Marking another significant step forward for international cooperation, SEAMEO SPAFA also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HIST during the event, solidifying our shared commitment to leveraging technology for heritage preservation.

SEAMEO SPAFA is honored to contribute to this important international dialogue, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange to protect and sustainably manage our cultural and natural heritage for future generations. 🌱🏛️

International Museum Day 2026: SEAMEO SPAFA joins the 4th China–ASEAN Cultural Exchange Event 🏛️

Celebrating International Museum Day on 18 May 2026, SEAMEO SPAFA was honored to join the “4th China–ASEAN Cultural Exchange Event” at the invitation of the Reignwood Foundation held at Renshou Hall, East West Cultural Exchange Center, Reignwood Park, Thailand. 🏮

🎭 Under the theme “Experiencing Peking Opera in the Museum,” the event featured Peking Opera performances and exhibitions that introduced audiences to the richness and living tradition of this important intangible cultural heritage. The programme also highlighted cultural dialogue and mutual learning between the People’s Republic of China and Thailand through arts and museum spaces.

🤝 This meaningful occasion strengthens the collaborative efforts of SEAMEO SPAFA and the Reignwood Foundation in promoting cultural exchange and appreciation across the region and beyond.

SEAMEO SEN Visits SEAMEO SPAFA 🇲🇾🤝🇹🇭

On 15 May 2026, SEAMEO SPAFA welcomed our sister centre from Melaka, Malaysia—SEAMEO SEN—for a lively and productive courtesy visit!

Led by their Centre Director, Mdm Jamilah Kadir, the visit was a wonderful opportunity to revisit our shared history. We fondly recalled our 2018 collaboration, where SEAMEO SPAFA provided resource persons for Storytelling for Special Needs Children as part of SEAMEO SEN's training on Best Practices in Teaching and Learning. 📚✨

Beyond this exchange of memories and expertise, SEAMEO SEN introduced their upcoming learning resources on accessibility guidelines—a vital tool for inclusive education across the region.

Both centres are eager to reignite this collaborative spark and find new ways to align our missions, ensuring Southeast Asian culture and education are truly accessible to all. 🌏✨

With profound sorrow and heartfelt respect, SEAMEO SPAFA mourns the passing of Professor Emeritus Khunying Maenmas Chavalit.

A distinguished scholar and a pioneering figure in Thailand’s library and information science, Khunying Maenmas devoted her life to the advancement of knowledge and education with unwavering dedication.

As SEAMEO SPAFA’s first Library and Documentation Officer, she was instrumental in developing the Centre’s library and documentation systems, creating an enduring foundation for Southeast Asian archaeology, fine arts, and cultural heritage.

Her vision, wisdom, and kindness remain an inspiration to generations of scholars and professionals. We respectfully honor her remarkable legacy and extend our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

🏺 SEAMEO SPAFA Co-organises seminar “Prasa Yuan II” to Highlight Thailand–Vietnam Shared Heritage 🇹🇭🇻🇳

On 9 May 2026, SEAMEO SPAFA and the Creative History Club co-organised the academic seminar “Prasa Yuan II: From Beads and Gemstones to the D**g Son Drum Tradition” at the National Museum Bangkok.

As part of the “Creative History” initiative, this seminar explored shared histories and long-standing cultural connections between Thailand and Vietnam beyond modern national boundaries. Through archaeological evidence — including D**g Son drums, prehistoric gemstone beads, and ancient exchange networks across Southeast Asia — the programme highlighted the region’s deep historical interconnectedness and cultural exchanges across time.

🤝Bringing together leading archaeologists, academics, and heritage specialists, the seminar underscored the important role of historical and archaeological knowledge in encouraging respect for cultural diversity and strengthening appreciation for the interconnected histories that continue to shape the region today.
