Peacekeeping is readiness beyond war.

United Nations Peacekeeping operations are military missions conducted beyond conventional warfare.

They demand both readiness and professionalism.

The Army serves as the primary force in force generation and support.
In particular, the Thai HMEC has been developed under the UN Peacekeeping Capability Readiness System (PCRS).

Preparation began in 2017,
with deployment to South Sudan on 23 December 2018.

At its core, this mission is about:

Transforming a “military unit”
into one capable of operating effectively within an international environment.

It is not only about tactical proficiency,
but also about adherence to international standards
and the ability to operate cohesively with multinational forces.

From an operational perspective:

Peacekeeping is not about fighting to win.

It is about stabilizing situations
to create space for peace to emerge.

The key lesson is clear:

Readiness must begin before the mission starts,
and be sustained continuously
throughout the entire operation.

Because ultimately,

Sustainable peace
is not achieved by force alone,

but through

“credible, multidimensional readiness.”

Thai HMEC: Paving the Way for Peace in South Sudan

The Thai Horizontal Military Engineer Company (Thai HMEC),
under the leadership of Col.Burin Teerawattanavisit,
has successfully carried out its mission under
United Nations Mission in South Sudan
over a continuous period of 1 year and 9 months.

Engineering Excellence

The unit rehabilitated critical Main Supply Routes (MSRs), including:
• Rumbek–Mvolo
• Juba–Yei
• Mundri–Rumbek

Covering hundreds of kilometers,
these efforts significantly enhanced mobility,
logistics efficiency,
and humanitarian access across operational areas.

In addition, the unit:
• Constructed facilities in accordance with United Nations standards
• Provided operational support to the Rwanda Aviation Unit

Community & Humanitarian Impact

Beyond engineering operations,
the mission integrated Thailand’s Sufficiency Economy Philosophy
into practical, community-based development.

Key initiatives included:
• Establishing learning centers for organic agriculture
• Promoting sustainable livelihood practices

“A playground may be small—but with laughter, it becomes bigger than the sky.”

Under the Thai Engineer Civic Action Project within the United Nations Mission in South Sudan,
a playground was officially handed over in Jondoru, South Sudan.

The ceremony was presided over by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative,
and accompanied by a rugby match—bringing joy, energy, and a renewed sense of unity to the community.

Once a place overshadowed by conflict,
Jondoru now echoes again with the laughter of children
and the cheers from the field.

This transformation was made possible through the dedication of Thai military engineers,
who not only built a playground,
but also created a space for healing, connection, and shared happiness.

In Jondoru, South Sudan,
where silence once lingered in the aftermath of conflict,
laughter has returned.

Through the Thai Engineer Civic Action Project under UNMISS,
a new playground now stands as a symbol of renewal—

รอยยิ้มของเด็กๆ ชาวเซาท์ซูดาน คือคำขอบคุณที่ชัดเจนที่สุดต่อทหารไทย ผู้ร่วมกันฟื้นฟูโรงเรียนที่เสียหายจากสงครามกลางเมือง ให้กลับมาเป็นพื้นที่แห่งการเรียนรู้และความหวังอีกครั้ง

ภารกิจของทหารบางครั้งไม่ได้วัดจากอาวุธหรือกำลังรบ หากวัดจาก “หัวใจ” ที่พร้อมซ่อมแซมสิ่งที่สงครามทำลาย และช่วยสร้างอนาคตให้เด็กๆ ที่เคยถูกพรากโอกาสไป ทหารไทยในภารกิจ UNMISS จึงไม่ได้เป็นเพียงผู้รักษาสันติภาพ แต่ยังเป็นผู้ร่วมสร้างเส้นทางสู่อนาคต ผ่านการฟื้นฟูห้องเรียนและโอกาสทางการศึกษาให้กับเด็กๆ เซาท์ซูดาน

เมล่อนสดจากศูนย์การเรียนรู้ปรัชญาเศรษฐกิจพอเพียงในค่ายทหารไทย ณ ประเทศเซาท์ซูดาน คือผลลัพธ์ของการทดลอง พัฒนา และลงมือทำอย่างมีหลักคิด

มีการปลูกเมล่อนหลายสายพันธุ์เพื่อคัดเลือกพันธุ์ที่เหมาะสมกับสภาพภูมิอากาศของเซาท์ซูดาน พร้อมนำเศษอาหารที่ผ่านการคัดแยกและย่อยสลายมาผลิตเป็นปุ๋ยหมัก แปรสภาพเป็นดินปลูก สะท้อนแนวคิด “ไม่ทิ้งแม้แต่เศษหนึ่งของคุณค่า”

Sweet, juicy melons grown at the Sufficiency Economy Learning Center in the Thai military camp in South Sudan are the result of thoughtful experimentation and sustainable practice.

Different melon varieties were cultivated to identify those best suited to the local climate, while biodegradable food waste was composted and transformed into fertile soil—demonstrating that no resource is without value when guided by knowledge and purpose.

“Sa-Wad-Dee-Krub…” — คำไทยง่ายๆ ที่กลายเป็นเสียงทักทายอบอุ่นกลางแอฟริกา

“สวัสดีครับ” เสียงทักทายจากเด็กๆ ชาวเซาท์ซูดานที่เปล่งออกมาพร้อมรอยยิ้ม เมื่อเห็นทหารไทยเดินผ่านหมู่บ้านหรือกำลังก่อสร้างถนน ไม่ได้เป็นเพียงคำเรียก หากคือสัญลักษณ์ของความไว้วางใจ ความอบอุ่น และมิตรภาพที่ก่อเกิดขึ้นระหว่างกัน

เส้นทางที่ทหารไทยสร้างขึ้นจึงไม่ได้มีเพียงรอยล้อของเครื่องจักร แต่ยังมีรอยยิ้มและแววตาแห่งความหวังของเด็กๆ สำหรับพวกเขา ทหารไทยไม่ได้เป็นเพียงผู้สร้างถนน หากคือ “ฮีโร่ในชุดพราง” ที่เดินเคียงข้างความฝันของชุมชน
