South Sudan Reviews Progress on UNCRC Concluding Observations

On Friday, 28 August 2026, the Government High-Level Committee on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) Concluding Observations convened its quarterly review meeting at YAM Hotel, Juba.

The meeting was organized by the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare in collaboration with Save the Children International and the Child Rights Civil Society Coalition, with support from NORAD. It brought together representatives from key government institutions, including education, health, justice, defence, interior, foreign affairs, parliament, the Human Rights Commission and the National DDR Commission.

The meeting provided an important platform to assess progress, identify implementation gaps and strengthen coordination among government institutions in advancing children’s rights in South Sudan.

South Sudan ratified the UNCRC on 23 January 2015, committing to respect, protect and fulfil the rights of all children. The review of the concluding observations is therefore an important step toward translating these commitments into concrete actions for children.

This year’s theme, “My Day, My Rights,” celebrates children and their right to be heard and supported. In South Sudan many children face challenges such as limited access to education and healthcare, displacement, protection concerns, and exclusion from decision-making.

Abraham Daljang and Kafuki Jada will be hosting a special edition of Community Conversations as we spotlight children’s rights and inclusion.

Our guest Samuel Chor Alier, Advocate for Children’s Rights at Child Rights Civil Society Coalition, South Sudan, will share insights on the state of children's rights and explore how communities, leaders, and families can play a vital role in supporting them.
