Haze Occurrence in Singapore and Malaysia
In Singapore and Malaysia, “haze” can occur for several days to several weeks due to smoke being carried by the southwest monsoon from large-scale open burning and forest fires in Sumatra, Indonesia. If the situation worsens, the concentration of PM2.5 and other pollutants increases which greatly reduces visibility, and also causes eye and throat irritation, coughs, headaches and mild fevers.
On the morning of September 4, 2026, the 24hr Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) in Singapore temporarily rose to an “unhealthy” level. Therefore, we recommend that those planning to travel to this region gather timely information and take suitable measures as described below.
1. Where to check for haze information
● Check the latest haze information in Singapore on https://www.haze.gov.sg/
● The website of the Japanese Embassy in Singapore provides explanations in Japanese regarding haze indicators, etc. (Notification dated September 17, 2019)
https://www.sg.emb-japan.go.jp/files/000517969.pdf
● You can check Malaysia's air pollution index on this website. (English)

2. Measures
The following measures are considered to be effective, but are only for reference as it varies for different people.
● Wear a mask (although it is also readily available locally, it is expensive, so we recommend bringing it from Japan)
● Gargle frequently
● Drink more water than usual
● Use eye drops or throat lozenges
● Refrain from outdoor activities. Avoid particularly strenuous exercise
● When indoors, close the windows
● Use an air conditioner or air purifier
● If symptoms occur, see a doctor as soon as possible
**Children, elderly, pregnant women, people with asthma, allergies, skin diseases such as atopy, heart disease, lung disease etc. should be extra careful.

https://www.haze.gov.sg/
https://www.sg.emb-japan.go.jp/files/000517969.pdf
