We are pleased to announce that the 19th Japan-Singapore Symposium will take place on 10 -11 September. This year’s theme, “Partnering for Resilience”, will bring together leaders and experts from both countries to discuss how Japan and Singapore can strengthen their partnership and build resilience amid a shifting regional landscape.

The Public Forum will be held on Friday, 11 September, from 1:30pm to 5pm at the Conrad Singapore Marina Bay, Grand Ballroom, Level 2, and is open to all with advance registration.

The two panel discussions will focus on:

🇸🇬 Singapore celebrated its first-ever Paralympic Day on 29 August!

It was a wonderful day celebrating the Paralympic Movement and the achievements of para-athletes, while raising awareness about para sports and the importance of building a more inclusive society.

The event brought together para-athletes, families, schools, corporate partners and members of the public through a range of activities, including para sports tryouts and the 3km Paralympic Walkathon.

Ambassador Ishikawa joined the celebrations and cheered on Team Singapore’s para-athletes as they prepare for the upcoming 5th Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, taking place from 18 to 24 October 2026. 🇯🇵

We look forward to cheering on the athletes in Aichi-Nagoya and celebrating the power of sport to inspire, connect and build a more inclusive society! ✨🇯🇵🇸🇬

⛩️🌊 Japan’s floating shrine

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island is one of Japan’s most recognisable cultural landscapes. Its shrine buildings appear to float above the sea during high tide, creating an iconic and ever-changing view.

𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐰𝐚 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐬☀️✨

The opening event of “Traditional Okinawan Crafts Exhibition: Bonds Connecting the Ryukyu Kingdom to the Present” was held at JCC on 2 September, featuring traditional Okinawan crafts and the story of Shuri Castle.

JCC Director Ms Kawabe Akiko welcomed the guests, highlighting Okinawa’s unique history and the culture it has shaped. Mr Uchima Hirotaka, Director of the Okinawa Prefectural Government Singapore Office, also addressed the guests, and shared many charms of Okinawa. Singaporean travel writer Ms Wendy Ng , a former JET ALT in Okinawa, spoke about the prefecture’s beauty, culture, food, and people, expressing her deep affection for Okinawa

Highlights included a live performance of sanshin (a three-stringed instrument unique to Okinawa) by the Singapore Sanshin Association. There was also a surprise at the end, as JCC Third Attache Ms Tobaru Ayumi, who is from Okinawa, led the audience to join in a traditional dance that is performed to celebrate good fortune. It was a night to immerse in Okinawan culture, as guests enjoyed local cuisine prepared by Nirai-Kanai, an Okinawan restaurant in Singapore, local drinks such as Awamori, Shikuwasa juice and Sanpin-cha, as well as star sand bottle-making experience.

On 24 August, the Embassy hosted a reception at the Ambassador’s residence for graduates of the National Defense Academy (NDA) and the Command and Staff Course of the Japan Self-Defense Forces Staff College.

We welcomed 43 alumni, together with their spouses, and Embassy staff, for a meaningful evening of exchange on Japan-Singapore cooperation in defence, society, the economy, and culture. 🇯🇵🤝🇸🇬

The opening ceremony of 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐞 & 𝐉𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐧 ~ 𝐏𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 ~ took place at JCC on 18 August, featuring special live music and painting by Japanese singer-songwriter and visual artist Ms Rie fu / Rié. This makes her return to JCC after her first showcase in 2015.

In her opening remarks, JCC Director Ms Kawabe Akiko introduced Ms Rie fu’s background and highlighted how the sounds of everyday lives often carry the culture, memories, and stories of communities. Ms Rie fu also addressed the full-house audience and shared her inspiration behind the exhibition. She then performed three of her most popular songs, including crowd favourite “Life is like a Boat” from the anime Bleach.

The opening ceremony continued with a live painting segment, in which she reimagined the evening at JCC through the sounds provided by the audience as they moved around, converse with each other, and viewed her works while observing her painting process. Titled “Japan Creative Centre, 18 August 2026”, the artwork captured her interpretation of the soundscape from the opening.

The evening concluded with a final song inspired by her years living in Singapore, followed by a Q&A with the audience.

The 60 Years of Sogetsu: Blooms Beyond Time exhibition kickstarted on 14 August, with Ms Jane Ittogi, Spouse of the President of the Republic of Singapore, gracing the opening as the Guest-of-Honour. Mrs Pandora Ip, President of Singapore Sogetsu Association, and Ms Kawabe Akiko, Director of JCC, both delivered remarks. This was followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an energising taiko (traditional Japanese drum) performance by Hibikiya.

The Guest-of-Honour and other VIP guests toured the exhibition, and were mesmerised by the carefully crafted floral arrangements. The exhibition is ongoing until 23 August.
