Imagine stepping into a classroom at six years old unable to understand a single word.

That was Yee Won’s reality when she moved to Singapore from Malaysia. Struggling to cope with English, she became quiet, withdrawn, and lost her self-esteem.

Everything changed when her mother enrolled her in Lakeside’s We Can Read programme. Matched with a patient volunteer for weekly one-to-one sessions, Yee Won found a safe, encouraging space to learn. Today, she is confident, expressive, and happily speaks English at home!

Through our Towards A Brave Future campaign, we raise crucial funds for early childhood literacy, mentoring, and student care services so more young learners can find their voice and thrive.

What does it take to rebuild your life after incarceration?

For Asziah, recovery meant facing fears of relapse, strained family relationships and the consequences of past choices. One of the biggest turning points came when her father passed away while she was still incarcerated, prompting her to reflect deeply on the life she wanted to rebuild.

As she prepared for release, Asziah came to know about Lakeside Family Services and the support available through Lakeside Family Services’ TJ Haven. Through counselling and regular check-ins with Lakeside, she found a safe space to speak openly, work through difficult emotions and stay grounded in her recovery journey.

Today, Asziah is holding steady employment, staying committed to recovery and taking steps to rebuild her relationships with her family.

“My hope moving forward is to continue staying strong in recovery, maintain a stable job, and rebuild a better relationship with my children and family.”

Through our A Million Steps – Into a New Season, we hope to continue walking alongside individuals like Asziah as they rebuild their lives, regain confidence and move forward one step at a time.

A new season begins with a single step. For seniors, a new season may come with retirement, loss or loneliness. For ex-offenders, it can mean rebuilding their lives while facing judgement, isolation and uncertainty.

Different journeys, but a shared need for support, belonging and the confidence to keep moving forward.

At Lakeside Family Services, we walk alongside seniors and ex-offenders as they take meaningful steps towards renewed purpose, stronger connections and a fresh start.

That is why we are launching our A Million Steps – Into A New Season campaign to support and empower our beneficiaries to overcome past challenges, embrace new opportunities, and confidently take their next step towards a brighter new season of life.

Because new beginnings are not made in one leap. They are built step by step, and no one should have to take those steps alone.

How can you walk with our beneficiaries?
• Give to support our vital programmes for seniors, ex-inmates and their families: https://lakeside.org.sg/support-us/a-million-steps-into-a-new-season/

Look at this beautiful wave of love and encouragement!

To every single one of you who has raised a hand, held up a note, and shared a warm smile for our beneficiaries. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Your words of hope are much more than just ink on paper or skin. To a child or youth facing daunting hurdles, these messages are powerful reminders that they are seen, valued, and cheered on by an entire community. Seeing your faces and reading your heartfelt messages gives our young people the courage they need to believe in themselves and reach for their dreams.

Every single contribution, whether it is a word of encouragement or a gift of support, acts as the steady wind in their sails as they navigate towards a brighter tomorrow. If you have not joined our movement yet, there is still time to offer your hand of hope!

Here’s how:
✍️ Write: Write an uplifting word or short phrase of hope on your palm or a piece of paper.

📸 Capture: Hold it up to the camera and show us your most encouraging smile.

🌟 Share: Post it on your profile, tag , and use .

Most of all, we invite you to support our Towards a Brave Future campaign today! Your small acts of support help our children and youths to overcome challenges and move closer to achieving their dreams. Donate now at: https://lakeside.org.sg/support-us/towards-a-brave-future/

Think back to the people who helped shape the person you are today. Perhaps it was a teacher who refused to give up on you, a mentor who listened, or a friend who offered a steady hand when life felt overwhelming. We would not be where we are today without those who chose to believe in us.

For Tristan, a volunteer at Lakeside Family Services (Lakeside), remembering the support he received during his own childhood is what drives him to give back today. As a reader in Lakeside’s Reading Intervention Services, Tristan helps young children overcome their shyness, build essential literacy skills, and find the courage to read aloud with confidence.

But this is about more than just reading. This is about a beautiful, continuous cycle of giving. Through the kindness Tristan shares today, we hope the children he guides will one day carry that same spirit forward and, in turn, support others in need.

This is the heart of Lakeside’s Towards A Brave Future campaign.
By raising crucial funds for our children and youth programmes—including mentoring, childhood literacy, and student care—we provide the opportunities, guidance, and care that they need to build resilience, confidence, and hope for tomorrow.

Similar to Tristan, you too can play a part in changing the lives of children and youths. Give to our Towards a Brave Future or start a fundraiser, so more young people can receive the support they need to build a brave future: https://lakeside.org.sg/support-us/towards-a-brave-future/?utm_source=Facebook+&utm_medium=Social+&utm_campaign=RIS+Tristan&utm_content=RIS+Tristan

Who would have thought that a once troubled teen would one day be giving back to his community?

Luke (not his real name) grew up having to face many challenges at home and with limited positive adult guidance. All these shaped his behaviour — he often acted rashly and was involved in stealing, fighting, and other delinquent behaviours.

Things began to change when he was introduced to (TGP) by his classmate. Our TGP programmes provide young people a safe space for self-discovery and empowerment. With encouragement and guidance from TGP staff and volunteers, Luke learned to make better choices and respond calmly, even in difficult situations.

Today, Luke volunteers actively to give back to the community, and has also started to dream bigger. Inspired by the staff who guided him, he hopes to take on leadership roles and is also considering a path in social work.

Luke’s story reminds us that with the right support, young people can grow beyond their circumstances and reach their potential.

Your giving can change a youth’s life. Sponsor a golf flight, dinner table, or make a donation today to enjoy grant-matching and 250% tax deduction on your charitable giving: https://lakeside.org.sg/support-us/lakeside-charity-golf-and-dinner-2026/?utm_source=Facebook+&utm_medium=Social+&utm_campaign=Golf+Luke&utm_content=Golf+Luke

How does a homebody become the life of the party?

64-year-old Mdm Soh once described herself as a reserved and fearful person. That changed when she began her volunteering journey 15 years ago, when we invited her to cook for our seniors’ programme, which inspired her to start giving back.

When entrusted with responsibilities, Mdm Soh feels happy and appreciated. She enjoys planning games, preparing meals, and assisting seniors with exercise. She motivates seniors who are shy or hesitant to participate. Inspired by her dedication, her friends and neighbours flocked to join Kaki Kampong Seniors Wellness (KKSW) and take up volunteering too. Even her husband started contributing by driving seniors with mobility issues to our programmes.

Mdm Soh is deeply encouraged by the love and support she receives from the seniors, many of whom have become her friends. Now a role model among volunteers, she has truly come out of her shell, made so many feel welcome and turned strangers into friends. Stories like hers remind us of the importance of creating a sense of purpose and belonging for seniors.

Through KKSW, seniors are empowered to stay active, do good in the community, and reach out to isolated and vulnerable seniors. You can help us sustain the KKSW community by giving to our Lakeside Charity Golf and Dinner 2026.

Sponsor a golf flight, dinner table, or give a cash donation of any amount now!

$500 can provide 15 active seniors and 5 vulnerable seniors with 2 months’ programmes and activities to improve their well-being and enhance social connectedness: https://lakeside.org.sg/support-us/lakeside-charity-golf-and-dinner-2026/?utm_source=Facebook+&utm_medium=Social+Ads&utm_campaign=Golf+Hong+Lian&utm_content=Golf+Hong+Lian
