On 16 April 2026, our Secondary 3 G3 Chinese Language (CL), Secondary 4 Higher Chinese Language (HCL) and Secondary 5 G3 Chinese Language (CL) students attended a performance of the iconic local musical, "Lao Jiu" (《老九》). For many students, this was their first experience watching a Chinese musical, providing them with a rich opportunity to deepen their appreciation for the performing arts and local cultural heritage.
The production sparked deep introspection among the students regarding its core theme — the poignant conflict between pursuing one's dreams and confronting practical realities. Relating these struggles to their own lives, students engaged in vibrant discussions and penned thoughtful reflections. To take their learning further, students applied 21st Century Competencies (21CC) by utilising AI and digital drawing tools to creatively visualise the protagonist’s future. This activity showcased their Critical and Inventive Thinking as well as their digital literacy skills.
"The takeaway for me is that regardless of parental expectations, we must make choices that bring us true fulfillment and take full responsibility for them. Living a life based on choices that make us unhappy will only lead to lifelong regret." (Lim Jin Ying, 3-3)
"After watching 'Lao Jiu', I realised that at life's crossroads, there are no absolute right or wrong answers. What matters most is having self-belief and the courage to embrace the consequences of our decisions." (Yeow Bei Ning, 3-3)
Ultimately, this authentic learning experience extended well beyond the classroom. It empowered our students to become active and reflective thinkers, equipping them with essential life skills to navigate future crossroads with resilience and confidence.
