George Suppiah (in fact, it is Govindasamy Suppiah) was the first Singaporean referee to be selected to officiate a match at a World Cup. He was the referee for the Poland-Haiti match at the 1974 World Cup which Polan won 7-0. He also acted as linesman in two other matches at that World Cup.
G. Suppiah started his referee's career in 1953 and became a FIFA in 1967.
He was a much respected figure within the Singapore soccer circle and his opinion on refereeing decisions was much sought after. He also conducted international seminars for international referees.
He passed away in 2012.
Anyone with any personal memories of this legendary figure?
