Prospects for Kazakhstan-ASEAN Cooperation Discussed in Singapore
Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Singapore Askar Kuttykadam held a meeting with Harry Go, Director-General for ASEAN of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore.
During the talks, the parties discussed current issues of Kazakhstan’s interaction with ASEAN, as well as prospects for the development of cooperation between the Association and other regional structures involving Kazakhstan.
The Kazakh Ambassador expressed gratitude to the Singaporean side for its support for Astana’s accession to the fundamental document governing relations between ASEAN and its partners – the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (the Bali Treaty). Accession to the Bali Treaty will help intensify Kazakhstan’s trade, economic, and investment ties with ASEAN and will create prerequisites for the further institutionalization of relations.
Particular attention during the talks was paid to Singapore’s forthcoming ASEAN Chairmanship in 2027. The parties exchanged views on further strengthening interregional cooperation, including along the Central Asia-ASEAN and EAEU-ASEAN tracks, as well as on promoting mutually beneficial initiatives in such areas as digitalization and artificial intelligence, transport connectivity, and food security.
ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) is an influential regional intergovernmental organization established in August 1967. Its objective is to promote socio-economic and cultural cooperation among its 11 member states (Singapore, Brunei, Timor-Leste, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and the Philippines), as well as to strengthen peace and stability in Southeast Asia.
