Roots of Catholicism in Singapore

Roots of Catholicism in Singapore This page provides useful information on the origins of the Catholic church in Singapore as well as information on related tours.

Roots of Catholicism (ROC) is a not for profit organisation started by Gwendolyn Thong, a catholic history teacher and chorister, in 2015 for the purpose of sharing the history and music of the Catholic church with other enthusiasts in Singapore. On 20 June 2015, the Church of Divine Mercy choir conducted ROC2015 to unravel the historical origins of the Catholic faith in Singapore by sharing about

the history of SJI and the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd. This culminated in a choral presentation by the St. Augustine Choir from the Church of Divine Mercy at the beautiful St. Joseph's Church, Victoria Street. In the following year, ROC2016, St. Teresa's Church and the Carmelites took place on 28 August 2016. This second tour brought us to the pristine white Church of St Teresa at Kampong Bahru to learn about the history of the church and the Carmelite monastery close by. We were blessed to be granted the permission to hold a choral presentation at the Carmelite chapel at the monastery. As our group of dedicated historians, guides and musicians grow, we are now able develop more events and publications to share with others about the history and music of the Catholic church. This has been a consistent and rigorous effort on the part of all of us, trying to bring to you the most historically accurate account of our shared history as well as the best sacred music from the church. Please drop us a message if you would like to volunteer as a singer, artist, writer or a guide for any of our events. You do not have to be a catholic to join us. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
