Behind the Speaker’s Chair — Join Us for an Exclusive Dialogue with the Speaker of Parliament

Parliament is often seen from the outside — through Question Time clips, Budget debate headlines, or the occasional viral exchange in the House. But what does it actually take to run the institution at the heart of Singapore’s political system, especially through moments of crisis, disruption, and generational change?

As Singapore navigates an increasingly complex landscape — from AI and demographic shifts to evolving expectations of civic participation — questions about how Parliament adapts, consults, and maintains trust have never been more relevant to young Singaporeans thinking about their place in this system.

Join us for an intimate dialogue with Mr Seah Kian Peng, the Speaker of Parliament, who brings a rare vantage point — having served as Deputy Speaker between 2011 to 2016 and now presided over the House as Speaker since 2023.
This is a rare opportunity to move beyond the formalities of Parliament and hear directly from the person responsible for holding the institution together — its culture, its guardrails, and its future.

Be part of the conversation and gain a deeper understanding of how Singapore’s Parliament works, and where it’s headed.

SMU Apolitical Society was honoured to host Mrs. Josephine Teo, Minister for Digital Development and Information, Nicole Tan, Managing Director of Meta Singapore, and Benjamin Chan, Founder of Mythos, for our dialogue, Living with AI: Governance, Disruption & the Road Ahead. 🤝

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries, societies, and the way we live, the dialogue explored how our Government, businesses, and individuals can navigate the opportunities and challenges brought about by AI. Through an engaging panel discussion and Q&A session, our speakers shared valuable perspectives on AI governance, innovation, digital trust, and the importance of preparing for an increasingly AI-driven future. 💬
We extend our sincere appreciation to Minister Josephine Teo, Nicole Tan, and Benjamin Chan for their thoughtful insights and for taking the time to engage directly with our student community. 🙏

This event would not have been possible without the dedication of the SMU Apolitical Society organising team, moderator, partners, and supporting staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the dialogue a meaningful and enriching experience for all.
Lastly, thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed thoughtful questions and perspectives throughout the session. Your curiosity and active participation made this conversation especially impactful and reminded us of the importance of staying informed as technology continues to evolve.

As AI shapes the future, meaningful conversations like these are more important than ever. Let us continue to stay curious, think critically, and engage thoughtfully with the technologies transforming our world. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events! 💙
