The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) installed a “roost net system” on Thursday (27 Dec) at the carpark behind Block 146 Potong Pasir Avenue 1, to control the Javan Myna population in the precinct.
The problem of the mynahs’ congregation first surfaced 2 years ago when they started roosting at the trees along Upper Serangoon Road. The affected areas were beyond HDB estates managed by the Town Council. In response to the congregation, the AVA and the National Parks Board (NParks) conducted hard-pruning to the trees around September this year.
This caused the mynahs to migrate into the current Potong Pasir heartlands. Since then, we received feedback about the mynah noise disturbances as well as public hygiene and cleanliness concerns from our residents. Thereafter, the AVA is engaged to look into the issues.
Following the AVA’s operation on Thursday, it has come to the Town Council’s attention that some residents misunderstood the Town Council funds were utilised for the said AVA’s operation.
We wish to clarify that Town Council funds were not utilised. The Town Council acted as a facilitator to the AVA’s operation by liaising with the relevant authorities and barricading the designated section of the car park lots.
In the meantime, the AVA will continue to explore solutions to address the mynahs’ issues in the Potong Pasir heartlands.
