'Home of the Combat Soldiers' Safety is of great importance in military training throughout the SAF.

The Singapore Armed Forces Basic Military Training Centre (SAF BMTC) introduces civilian enlistees to military life and equip them with basic soldiering skills, discipline and routines, as a foundation for them to cope with more advanced military training subsequently. On completion of Basic Military Skills (BMT), the young men will emerge as confident soldiers, prepared to take on the challenges

of serving in the military. SAF BMTC aims to ease the recruits’ transition from civilian to military lifestyle with a progressive training programme, which includes physical training, weapon-handling, individual field craft, training in a field environment, as well as team-building skills. Reasearch-based principles of fitness training are also incorporated into the way in which these sessions are conducted. The recruits are supported by a professional group of commanders in SAF BMTC, who aims to build a partnership with the recruits through guiding and coaching them along their new and unfamiliar journey that has been well trodden by many young soldiers in the past. All training sessions, strictly follow a regularly reviewed set of Training Safety Regulations (TSR), taking into consideration improved practices, medical research and benchmarked safety measures. Our commanders are well-versed in these regulations and strictly stand by them. To ensure the safety, physical health and well-being of our recruits, we also have medical services well integrated with the national health system, with military doctors on duty round the clock. The SAF places great emphasis on independence and teamwork in the development of our servicemen. The recruits are introduced to team building exercises to assist them in their progressive adaptation to the SAF. The training standards for BMT are high for national defence, but they are realistic and achievable, with safety as a top priority in our training approach. The successful completion of BMT signifies the start of the recruits’ journey within the SAF, and subsequently a step up for them to make their mark later in life.

Faces Of BMTC

Meet REC Reyes Loh from 4th Company, Basic Military Training Centre (BMTC) School 4!

Before enlistment, REC Reyes was a national triathlete. Beyond competition and medals, he has always believed that growth comes from stepping out of one’s comfort zone. Entering BMT meant taking on a new challenge, where he learned to balance the demands of both sport and service while staying grounded by the support of his family and the pride of representing Singapore.

The shift from individual sport to military life was not easy. He had to learn to put the team first, drawing strength not just from personal performance but from supporting those around him. With encouragement from his parents, guidance from commanders, and the camaraderie of his platoon, he came to understand that resilience is built together.

Through BMT, REC Reyes became stronger both mentally and physically. He learned to push past limits, perform under fatigue, and face challenges with confidence. His message is simple: start where you are, keep showing up, and trust the people around you. Excellence is not about perfect conditions, but about perseverance and purpose.

After months of training, Recruits’ Night was a chance for recruits to finally let loose, celebrate, and enjoy the company of the brothers they had journeyed alongside since day one.

Filled with performances, laughter, and shared memories, the night reflected how far they had come together. What started with unfamiliar faces, early mornings, and tough routines had slowly grown into friendships, confidence, and a brotherhood forged through every challenge faced side by side.

As BMT draws to a close, Recruits’ Night became more than just a celebration, it was a reminder of the memories and bonds that would stay with them long after they graduate from BMT.

The mornings in Pulau Tekong are starting to feel different.

What once felt unfamiliar, the early reveilles, morning PT sessions, and life in the bunks have slowly become part of everyday life. As recruits enter their second last week of Basic Military Training, the routines that once challenged them now reflect just how far they have come.

Through every tough conduct, strangers gradually became brothers-in-arms. The physical strength they built was important, but so were the friendships, resilience and memories formed along the way.

“Going through these few months with my section and company, I realised we had bonded really closely together. Now I feel this pride and prestige in serving the country.”

Soon, these bunks will no longer be their home, and the island that shaped them over the past weeks will become a chapter they look back on with pride.
The end of BMT may be approaching, but it will be a reminder of the transformation they have gone through together.

Games Day brought the energy as recruits traded drills for a spirited day of friendly rivalry and competition.

From Ultimate Frisbee and Tug-of-war to roaring cheer competitions, the field came alive with determination, laughter, and no shortage of roaring cheers. Creativity, camaraderie, and fighting spirit were on full display as recruits gave their all, whether competing on the ground or cheering from the sidelines.

Amid the excitement and celebration, Games Day offered a well-earned opportunity to recharge, strengthen friendships, and forge memories that will last long after training ends. Victory may belong to a team, but the shared experience belonged to everyone.

With sirens blaring and adrenaline pumping, recruits were pushed to their limits at the Battle Inoculation Course (BIC).

Designed as a simulated battlefield environment, the BIC challenged recruits to apply their soldiering skills under pressure while manoeuvring tactically through demanding obstacles with enemy fire overhead. More than just a test of physical endurance, the course developed their confidence, discipline, mental resilience, and fighting spirit.

Through grit, teamwork, and determination, recruits overcame fear, pushed through adversity, and completed one of the defining milestones of their BMT journey.

Last week, the Basic Military Training Centre (BMTC) received the 03/26 PTP enlistees and their families as they stepped into their first milestone at the Direct Enlistment Exercise.

This marks the beginning of a transformative journey where they will be challenged physically and mentally, forging the strength, resilience and confidence that define every soldier.

After 4 demanding days of Individual Field Craft training, recruits faced one final challenge, the Situational Awareness Test (SITEST).

Designed to test their quick thinking, decision-making and composure under pressure, it pushed recruits to apply everything they had learned throughout their field training. From reacting to changing situations to making split-second judgments, every scenario required them to stay alert, focused and adaptable.

Through resilience, teamwork and determination, recruits proved that they were capable of overcoming challenges even in the toughest conditions.

In the field, letters from parents, family and loved ones become a powerful reminder that our recruits were never alone in this journey. Words of encouragement, pride and support brought comfort to the recruits, with some overwhelmed with emotion as they read messages from home.

Beyond the tough training and long days, these letters reminded them the reason to continually push forward. Recharged by the support of those closest to them, recruits carried on with renewed strength, resilience and determination.

Even in the toughest moments, a few heartfelt words can go a long way.

Field Camp marked one of the toughest and most transformative phases of our recruits’ Basic Military Training.

Over five days in the field, recruits adapted to life away from familiar comforts, carrying out missions while enduring heat and fatigue. From constructing Basic Field Shelters and digging Shell Scrapes to executing Fire and Movements, every activity reinforced essential Individual Field Craft (IFC) skills and prepared them to operate effectively in austere environments.

The experience demanded consistency under pressure. Even while exhausted, recruits were expected to think clearly, follow drills precisely, and continue functioning as a team. Through the realities of field living and training, they developed discipline, confidence, and a stronger understanding of the responsibilities carried by every soldier.
