What if your concert started with a book? 📖

That’s exactly how concert-goers at the Xinyao concert kicked off their evening with pre-loved books and a 15 minutes reading session at the Singapore Botanic Gardens, in support of ReadSG, NLB’s new national reading movement.

Just 15 minutes a day is all it takes to start building a reading habit. And yes, reading can fit into your everyday routine, even before a concert! 🎶

September is also National Reading Month. 📚 Every reading session logged as part of the ReadSG Challenge counts towards Read for Good, NLB’s charity drive that raises funds for less privileged communities. Those who checked in at the concert via CrowdTaskSG also earned bonus points for the ReadSG Challenge.

More ReadSG events are coming your way. Pick up a book, set aside 15 minutes, and let’s build a lifelong reading habit together!

Some books stay with us long after we finish reading them. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Patron of ReadSG, shares how reading can broaden our minds, and deepen our understanding of our worlds.

ReadSG is Singapore's multi-year national reading campaign aimed at nurturing reading as a lifelong habit. Launched in September 2026 by NLB, ReadSG brings together partners across Singapore to make reading more accessible, enjoyable and meaningful for everyone.

Meet Cherie Loh, a Librarian at NLB.

Just yesterday, her second puzzle in the Straits Times x NLB crossword series was published. Her clues covered your neighbourhood supermarket, a local Member of Parliament, and our MRT lines, bringing in little pieces of Singapore. And her clues even come with book recommendations, so working through her crossword can lead to finding your next read.

Cherie is one of the 40 faces behind the crossword collaboration between NLB and ST. Give her puzzles a go and see how many pieces of Singapore you recognise!

Today, we marked the start of Singapore's inaugural National Reading Month with the launch of ReadSG, a five-year national reading initiative encouraging Singaporeans to make reading part of their everyday lives, starting with just 15 minutes a day.

President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Patron of ReadSG, and Ms Jane Ittogi were joined by Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo; Minister of State for Digital Development and Information Rahayu Mahzam; as well as NLB's Chairman Lee Seow Hiang and Chief Executive Officer Melissa Tam to celebrate this occasion. People from across Singapore came together for a mass reading activity, taking 15 minutes to sit down, pick up a book and simply read.

The celebrations continued with storytelling and book-sharing sessions, a marketplace featuring local bookstores and artists, and a book-inspired dance performance to bring stories to life in different ways.

And today is just the beginning. It's time to build your reading muscle. Take 15 minutes to read each day and be part of ReadSG with us. Whether it's a few pages on your commute, during your lunch break or before bed, every little bit of reading counts.

Find out more and get started at read.gov.sg.

National Reading Month starts today. Are you ready to build a habit for life?

From 6 September, we're launching the ReadSG Challenge. And all you need to do is read 15 minutes a day.

That's about the time between a few MRT stops, waiting for your bus, or enjoying your morning coffee. Those small moments add up to big stories.

What are you reading this month? Tell us in the comments! Bonus points if it's something you've been putting off for months.

Something new is coming to the National Library Singapore this December!🎉

NLB will be bringing the Four Great Classics - Journey to the West, Water Margin, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Dream of the Red Chamber - to life through an immersive exhibition! Featuring rare cultural relics on loan from the National Library of China, some of which have never been exhibited outside of China, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to encounter these literary treasures up close.

But did you know these stories have connections right here in Singapore? Explore our National Library collections, including a 30-volume Baba Malay translation of Romance of the Three Kingdoms published in Singapore in the 1890s, a testament to how these classics have transcended languages and cultures to become part of our multicultural heritage.

We can't wait to welcome visitors from all communities to discover more about these stories that have shaped cultures across Asia for centuries!

Stay tuned for more details! 📚

A new chapter begins.

National Reading Movement is now ReadSG.

In this digital era, it’s hard to remember when was the last time you really got to sit down and read a book. There are more distractions, more responsibilities than there were 10 years ago. And if you’ve been feeling it's been getting harder to read deeply, read critically, read well, you are not alone.

We want to inspire a love for reading and nurture a vibrant reading culture, while acknowledging that it is getting more and more difficult to find the time to get lost in a book. So while our name has changed, the spirit of the reading movement has not.

We want to build on the successes and momentum of the National Reading Movement. ReadSG will continue to bring together partners across Singapore to make reading more accessible, enjoyable and meaningful for everyone. Join us as we share book recommendations, reading inspiration, and opportunities to connect through stories.

ReadSG is but the next installment in the series. Here’s to a new page.
