🍃 Ume Season Has Arrived in Japan! ✨
Every year around June, ume, often called Japanese plums, begin appearing in markets across Japan, marking the start of early summer. 🌿
In Japan, ume has long been preserved and enjoyed in many forms, such as umeboshi, ume syrup, and sometimes umeshu. With its refreshing sweet-and-tart flavour, ume drinks are especially enjoyable in warm weather — and are a refreshing option for Singapore’s warm climate too. ☀️
Umeboshi is one of Japan’s classic preserved foods and is said to have been eaten since the Heian period. Even today, it is commonly enjoyed with rice, including in onigiri and okayu, Japanese rice porridge. 🍙 Its flavour can vary depending on the maker, region, or household tradition — from salty and sharply sour to milder or slightly sweet.
🛒 You may also come across ume products such as ume drinks, umeboshi, and ume-flavoured snacks or sweets at Japanese supermarkets and specialty stores in Singapore.
Have you tried ume before? What is your favourite way to enjoy it? 😊
