Is your kitchen fire suppression system due for servicing?

Under the SCDF Fire Code, wet chemical fire extinguishing systems for kitchen exhaust hoods must be of an approved type and based on international standards such as NFPA 17A.

This means the maintenance requirement does not stop at installation.

NFPA 17A stipulates that these systems should be serviced at least once every six months to help ensure they remain ready when needed.

For F&B operators, building owners and QPs, regular servicing is not just a best practice.

It is an important part of staying compliant, protecting your premises and keeping your team and customers safe.

- Approved system
- NFPA 17A standard
- Maintenance awareness

A hotel fire at JA Plus Hotel in Pattaya, Thailand, reportedly broke out at the rooftop area on 21 May, leading to a major evacuation and leaving four people injured.

Initial investigations suggest that an electrical short circuit on the rooftop area might have caused the blaze.

However, forensic police are expected to conduct a detailed examination to determine the exact cause once the situation is fully stabilised.

Firefighters were praised for bringing the blaze under control after more than an hour of effort.

Incidents like this remind us how quickly a fire can escalate in high-occupancy buildings such as hotels, where evacuation routes, early detection, emergency lighting, alarms, suppression systems, and trained staff can make a critical difference.

For hotels, commercial buildings, and facilities, fire safety is not just about compliance. It is about protecting lives when every second counts.

Stay prepared. Stay protected.

Following a deadly fire in Hong Kong, authorities are proposing a smoking ban across all construction sites to reduce fire risks and improve worker and public safety.

The move comes after investigations suggested that improper smoking practices may have contributed to the tragedy.

Construction and renovation sites are often filled with flammable materials, temporary electrical setups, and confined working spaces.

Making even a small ignition source potentially catastrophic.

At King Fire, we believe fire safety starts with prevention. Simple measures such as:
• Strict no-smoking policies near flammable materials
• Proper housekeeping of combustible materials
• Fire watch procedures
• Early fire detection systems
• Staff fire safety training

It can go a long way in preventing devastating incidents.

Whether it’s a construction site, industrial facility, or commercial building, staying vigilant and prepared is critical.

Fire safety is not just about compliance; it’s about protecting lives.

A fire can start in seconds, even from something as common as a charging power bank.

A recent fire at a flat in Simei left one person hospitalised for smoke inhalation and caused significant damage to the unit. Preliminary findings by the SCDF indicate that the fire likely originated from a power bank that was charging in the living room.

Incidents like this are an important reminder that lithium-ion batteries and charging devices should never be taken lightly. Overcharging, damaged batteries, poor-quality products, or leaving devices charging unattended for long periods can all increase the risk of fire.

Fire safety tips for homes:
• Avoid charging devices overnight or unattended
• Stop using swollen or damaged power banks immediately
• Use certified charging cables and adapters
• Keep charging devices away from beds, sofas, curtains, and other flammable materials
• Ensure your home is equipped with smoke detectors and fire extinguishers

Quick detection and early response can make all the difference between a minor incident and a devastating fire.

At King Fire, we believe fire safety starts with prevention, preparedness, and awareness. From residential fire safety essentials to advanced fire protection systems, we help homes and businesses stay protected before emergencies happen.
