Personal Data Protection Commission

Personal Data Protection Commission The PDPC serves as Singapore’s main authority to promote and enforce personal data protection. In this digital age, information flows fluidly and seamlessly.

Sophisticated technology allows for our personal data to be collected, used and disclosed easily for multiple purposes. This naturally raises personal data protection concerns. Addressing this issue, the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) 2012 sets and ensures a baseline standard for personal data protection in Singapore, educating individuals and organisations on their roles and responsibilities

in safeguarding personal data, and fostering an environment of trust as the foundation for Singapore’s progression as a digital economy.

So ask yourself this the next time you see an offer:

Is the freebie really worth your data? 🤔

CCTV footages aren't just used for safety and security purposes. 💡

Organisations may also use them for other purposes such as marketing. But under the PDPA, they must first inform you and get your consent to do so.

This allows you to decline if you’re not comfortable. ❌

Knowing your data protection rights when it comes to CCTV footages empowers you to ask questions and take action when needed. 💪

🚨 SCAM ALERT 🚨

There is a new variant of impersonation scams where victims receive phishing emails that falsely reference the PDPA to obtain their payment details.

Their latest move:⁣
✉️ Victims receive an email claiming their funds have been withheld.
⏰ Phishing emails referencing the PDPA to pressure you to give up your payment details as part of the verification process.

Don’t fall for it. Here’s what you should do if you've received similar emails:⁣

✅ Call PDPC directly to verify if the email is real.
✅ Do not click on any links or download files.
✅ Report the email to the police immediately.

❗️Organisations shouldn’t be using your NRIC number to authenticate you, and they have up till 31 Dec 2026 to review and correct their practices.

⚖️ Those that continue to do so after 31 Dec 2026 will face stricter enforcement actions from the PDPC.
