Japan just committed JPY 90.1 million to power a cleaner, more resilient Asia-Pacific.

At the Second Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM2) in Shanghai, Japan formalized its contribution to APEC's regional clean energy initiative, backing over 15 years of collective action that funds clean energy technologies, strengthening disaster-resilient infrastructure and expanding energy access for remote communities across the region.

"As economies across the region pursue both digital and energy transitions, ensuring access to reliable and sustainable energy has become increasingly urgent," said Tamura Hideyasu, Japan's Senior Official for APEC.

The MOU was signed by Tamura Hideyasu, Japan's Senior Official for APEC and Executive Director Eduardo Pedrosa.

The APEC Secretariat welcomed members of the United Nations Society of the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, for an immersive visit to learn how multilateral cooperation works beyond the classroom.

The students, from backgrounds in law, politics, philosophy and economics, heard from Secretariat colleagues on APEC's mission and role in the Asia-Pacific, how regional dialogue translates into practical cooperation and how research and economic analysis from the Policy Support Unit inform APEC's priorities.

This reflects APEC's commitment to engaging the next generation of global affairs practitioners, those who will one day contribute to the policies, partnerships, and institutions that shape the region.

Did you know that half the world's workers exist outside the formal economy? Are you one of them?

The 2025 APEC Economic Policy Report (AEPR) examines one of the region's most pressing structural challenges: informality.

Across the Asia-Pacific, millions of workers and businesses operate without access to social safety nets, legal protection or financial services. This limits their productivity, their earnings and their ability to grow.

The report explores the root causes of informality, from governance gaps and regulatory burdens to barriers in accessing finance and skills development. It also highlights how APEC economies are responding through digitalization, skills training and policy reform to bring more workers and businesses into the formal economy.

Formalization is a pathway to more inclusive and sustainable growth across the region. Read the full report here: https://www.apec.org/publications/2026/02/2025-apec-economic-policy-report

The APEC Secretariat hosted Patrick Brothers, Board Member and Executive Director at QS Quacquarelli Symonds and Maria Spies, Chief Innovation Officer at QS Quacquarelli Symonds, for a briefing on the future of education and workforce development in the Asia-Pacific.

The session drew on global higher education data and analytics to examine how artificial intelligence is reshaping learning systems, shifting skills demand and influencing the pathways between education and employment across the region.

The discussion reinforced a key message for APEC's work: that evidence-based, data-driven approaches are increasingly essential to informing policy and supporting economies as they navigate a rapidly changing skills landscape.

The APEC Secretariat Executive Director Eduardo Pedrosa visited Mexico City to engage with business leaders, government officials, academia and members of the diplomatic corps on APEC priorities and regional economic cooperation.

A key highlight of the visit was participation in the Second APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) Meeting, where he updated on progress in advancing ABAC’s 2025 recommendations and discussed priorities leading up to APEC’s meetings in Shanghai and Suzhou last month.

Together with Director of the APEC Policy Support Unit Carlos Kuriyama and Director of Communications and Public Affairs Fernando Salas, the Executive Director also met with Mexican Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard and senior officials from both Ministry of Economy and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, business organisations including the Mexican Business Council for Foreign Trade, and students and academics at the Center for Research and Teaching in Economics.

The visit underscored the importance of continued dialogue among government, business and academia in advancing sustainable and inclusive growth across the Asia-Pacific region. Mexico will host APEC in 2028.

Around 60 percent of active regional trade agreements originate within the Asia-Pacific. Ministers from all 21 APEC economies gathered in Suzhou on Friday to make sure that openness holds.

With protectionism rising and supply chains shifting, trade ministers examined how the region can advance the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific, harness digital trade and artificial intelligence for small and medium enterprises, and build more resilient, low-carbon supply chains.

As Li Chenggang, Vice Minister of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, put it, "It becomes ever more necessary for us to seek common ground, respect differences and overcome our difficulties together, injecting confidence into the world economy."

Oil prices are up 52.8 percent since February 2026, and Asia-Pacific households and businesses are paying the price.

APEC's latest Regional Trends Analysis finds that energy shocks, supply chain disruptions and rising trade barriers are impacting a region that grew 3.3 percent in 2025, with growth now forecast to slow to 3.1 percent in 2026.

"Higher cost of living for families, shrinking margins for businesses, slower job creation and growing uncertainty for economies, these are already being felt across the region," said Carlos Kuriyama, Director of the APEC Policy Support Unit.

Deeper cooperation on energy security, trade resilience and fiscal stability is the region's best buffer against further shocks.
