The current practice by NParks to build mulch volcanos near trees is causing harm and damage to the trees. The interior of the large mulch piles can reach 60C to 100C. Coupled with the high humidity of the tropics, this causes the tree to rot. Termites also find the large mulch piles a haven to breed. This practice is counterproductive to NParks goals of maintaining trees.

The practice by NParks Headquarters NParks Singapore of piling up mulch next to trees is terribly counterproductive. The mulch encourages termites to breed, it causes the affected tree part to rot and it damages the tree.

NParks creation of Mulch volcanoes damages trees!! Mulching is great and wonderful. Grinding up the tree waste and putting it back into the forest is good. But. Placing the mulch in large piles near trees or plants will harm them. The center of these big mulch piles can reach 60 to 80C. This will literally cook the tree if the big mulch pile is placed on top of the tree and it’s roots. In European countries you might be able to get away with this if the weather is extremely cold subzero. But this is Singapore where the average temperature hovers close to 30C. Coupled with the humidity, placing mulch so close to the trees will damage them and result in them dying and even collapsing. The huge mulch piles that Nparks creates is a haven for termites.

This is what happens when, after excessive rain, the drainage is poor and there is nowhere the water can run off. The soil turns to mud. And the tree roots cannot hold and it falls over.

The solution is to improve drainage. Or reduce the foliage on the trees to reduce the top weight.

One of the young tall trees closer to the gate needs to be pruned back. Its slanted on a sharp angle and has gotten top heavy. Cutting this back will not affect the foliage canopy because of the other older trees.

I created this page to help start a community page for the park at Sit Wah Road. The area comprises the Dog Park, the adjacent park and the forested border. This is purely an altruistic page with benevolent intentions. We seek to protect and enhance the park - the forested area, the trees and the grass land and to help make this environmental space a better place for all including the wildlife.

We will not be selling any merchandise or products

We will be using this page to help focus the community on issues which will help improve the place for everyone. For example, the need for improved drainage in the park area using French drains.

This will be a delicate balance and I'm sure we will not please everyone. But hopefully we will help improve things for everyone residents of the area, nature lovers, dog owners, and the wildlife.
