Named after Runme Shaw, the Shaw Library and Resource Centre caters to the academic needs of Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) staff and students, striving to provide a conducive place for teaching and learning through our facilities and resources. A Harvard University Professor Emeritus once said, “What a school thinks about its library is a measure of what it feels about education.” In ACS (Ind
ependent), staff and students have a healthy regard for the library as a place for one to acquire wisdom, knowledge and resources. The Library unwent expansion works in 2007, reopening in 2008 with an additional floor. In 2021, the library's lower level was repurposed into Our SpACe, a student activity centre that also houses the COG department. The library has various facilities for students and staff, including a photocopier, an NLB eBook kiosk, charging station lockers and 15 computers, 2 of which are used by students to print documents. The library's collections include fiction, non-fiction, comic, teacher's, ACS, third language (French, German, Spanish, Japanese), Chinese, Malay, Tamil and design thinking. The library also provides CDs, newspapers, magazines, Extended Essays (EE) and past year examination papers for reference. Pillars and walls of the library are filled with inspirational quotes from significant historical figures. More books, audio-visual aids and multi-media resources are regularly purchased to enhance our collection of materials, both print and non-print, and provide support materials for our students in their individualised studies, project work and research for their papers such as EEs. In line with the global trend towards digitalisation, the library has digitalised many of our resources. These include EEs, examination papers, books and magazines. Through the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) and library sharepoint, students and staff are able to access databases and resources that the library has subscribed to such as JSTOR. The library also provides access to NLB eResources. Student librarians assist in the Library for two hours on their duty days. The Executive Committee members have an opportunity to develop and hone their leadership skills by taking charge of assigning tasks and supervising student librarians while they're on duty. They also take charge of the recruitment campaign in January-February and organise library events and partnerships each year. Other than during examination periods, our student librarians continue to conduct their regular weekly duties to keep the library in excellent condition. Together as a team, all student and teacher librarians, including our teacher librarian Ms Ong Siew Lian and library officer Mdm Susie Wong, continue to strive to make the library a place that is truly conducive for teaching and learning, in line with our school motto, ‘The Best is Yet to Be’. You can find information about the library on our page, Instagram page and on the ACSI website.
