When my first baby was born, I spent almost 9,000 kr on a brand-new stroller. At the time, it felt like the obvious choice. Looking back, I just didn't know any different.

By my second baby, almost everything had changed. We swapped clothes with friends, discovered the goldmine that is Sweden's second-hand market, and realised how normal that is here. Not as a compromise. Just as a different way of thinking.

Living in Sweden changed the way I buy things. Honestly, I waste a lot less money now than I did when we first arrived. What's one thing you bought new at first, but would happily buy second-hand today?

A lot of families move further out to get more space for less money. It often makes sense. But the commute cost is real, and it's not just money: winter delays can make a 40-minute trip take twice as long. Where do you live and would you make the same choice again?

I expected someone to look after my daughter while I worked.

I didn't expect preschool to become one of the places where our whole family started feeling more connected to life here and learning how Swedish society actually ticks.

That surprised me. What surprised you most about preschool in Sweden?

There's no perfect answer. Some families are happier with more space. Others would gladly trade a bigger apartment for thirty extra minutes at home every day.

Distances on the map here can be deceiving if the train connections don't line up. I just think it's worth calculating the "hidden costs" of time before signing a contract.

If you could choose again, would you still live where you live today?

Second-hand strollers in Sweden are genuinely worth it, but there are a few things worth checking before you hand over the money. We broke it down in this week's.
Did you buy yours new or used? Any regrets either way?

Not knowing where to go when your child gets sick is one of those things that only becomes a problem at the worst possible moment. In most non-emergency situations, 1177 is always the right first call. They'll tell you exactly what to do and where to go.

What confused you most about Swedish healthcare when you first arrived?

There’s a whole category of things in Sweden that feel impossible to explain when you first move.

And then one day… you catch yourself doing them too.

Many people think the archipelago is only for people with summer houses.

It’s not. One ferry + snacks + a free day.

Save this for summer.

No Midsommar plans this year?

You're not the only one.

For a lot of families, especially in the first years in Sweden, this holiday can feel strangely private. It seems like everyone disappears somewhere and nobody explains the rules.

The good part is there aren't many rules.

You can buy strawberries, make flower crowns at home, find a public celebration nearby and call it a day.

How are you spending Midsommar this year?

Midsommar week can be a bit confusing the first few times. Shops close early, the city empties out, and everyone seems to disappear to the countryside at once.

We put together a quick guide on what to expect, especially if you're new here.

Anyone else remember being caught off guard by this the first year?
